バサーストで戦慄のクラッシュが発生。250km/hでカンガルーと激突したミースは無事「お土産にカンガルーのぬいぐるみを頼まれてたけど、やめるよ」オーストラリアのマウント・パノラマで行なわれたバサースト12時間。このレースではいくつかの大きなアクシデントが発生した。　中でもHRTフォード・レーシングのマスタングGT3を駆るクリストファー・ミースは、レース序盤にコンロッドストレートを走行中、カンガルーと激突してしまった。　コンロッドストレートはコース終盤区間のロングストレートであり、衝突時のスピードは250km/h。このアクシデントにより、マスタングのフロントウインドウは破壊されてしまった。　ミースは無事であったが、戦慄のアクシデントだったという事もあり、落ち着きを取り戻すのには数分を要した。「こうして立ってあなたと話せていることが嬉しい。高速の非常に大きなアクシデントだったけど、今ここで立っていられて良かった」　ミースはそう語る。「おそらくマスタングGT3にとってこれほど大きな衝撃を受けるのは初めてだったと思う。フォード・レーシングとマルチマティックが、これほど安全なレースカーを作ってくれたことを本当にうれしく思う。感謝したい」　ミース曰く、衝突は完全に不意を突かれたものだったという。激突により車内にはカンガルーの死骸が入り込んできて、コクピットは凄惨な状態。装備品も全て捨てることになったと明かす。「カンガルーが見えた瞬間こそが、衝突した瞬間だった。前兆は何もなかったし、フラッグも出ていなかった。おそらく（カンガルーは）目を覚まして走り出したんだと思う。僕はただ、悪いタイミングで悪い場所にいただけだ」「（装備品は）全部ゴミ箱行きだ。もう使えない。ひとつ言えるのは、カンガルーの“中身”の匂いはまったく良くないってことだね。でも今日フルレースを戦えなかったことについては、HRTとフォード・レーシングのチームのみんなに本当に申し訳なく思っている」　ショッキングなアクシデントに見舞われたものの、ミースは来年もマウント・パノラマに戻る意向を示している。ただし今回の経験を受けて、お土産の選択は変えるつもりだという。「息子に小さなカンガルーのぬいぐるみを買ってきてと頼まれていたんだ。でもそれはやめるよ。コアラかウォンバットにする。とにかくカンガルーはなしだね」とミースは冗談めかして語る。「それでも僕はオーストラリアが大好きだし、また必ず戻ってくるよ」アーロンは背骨を骨折　またバサーストで起きた大クラッシュはそれだけではなかった。クラフトバンブー・メルセデスを駆るラルフ・アーロンが、ダウンヒル区間のブラインドコーナーでスピンして止まっていたポルシェに激突。アーロンは背骨を骨折する重症を負ってしまった。　無線のトラブルもあり、アーロンは止まっているポルシェを避けきれなかった。自力で車を降りることはできたものの、コース脇に横たわる姿が中継でも映し出されていた。彼はマカオなど様々な市街地レースを経験してきたため、そのリスクを承知しているとしながらも、安全面を改善するための議論をしたいと自身のSNSに綴った。「こうした環境での経験は豊富であり、この種のレースに伴うリスクも理解している。しかしバサーストの状況は深刻なものだった。だからレースコントロールと面会し、僕の経験と見解を共有するためのオープンな議論を持ちたい」「これは誰かを非難するためではない。何が起きたのかを理解し、将来同様の状況を防ぐことが目的だ。この美しいサーキットでのレースが、できる限り安全なものにするためなんだ」関連ニュース:スーパーフォーミュラ【動画】SUGOの魔物？　カモシカと思われる動物の登場で赤旗中断NASCAR
