"Vhenan, I-" she swayed on her feet, exhaling through grit teeth, "think whatever you and Adan gave me has thoroughly worn off."
Solas was by her side in a moment, his hand hovering over her shoulder, ready to catch her if she fell. When it was apparent that she wasn't going to collapse, he guided her, with gentle hands, to their bed, instructing her to lay on her stomach as he fetched the potions he picked up from Adan.
Ellana whined in distress as her gaze fell upon the blue, slightly glowing potions.
"Are those lyrium potions?" She asked, eyes wide with urgency, "Solas, I still need to go and find Taigen's notes. The stuff you can buy from Seggrit will give you horrible mana imbalance. You'll be throwing up for days. I'll heal. It's not worth it." She struggled up onto her elbows and looked ready to slap the vials out of his hands. Perhaps it was good, then, that her injuries were preventing such drastic action.

"Atisha, vhenan," he chuckled as he laid the vials down on the bedside table and started brushing his hand through her hair. "I went to Adan to ask for Lyrium potions, and he sent me to find Taigen's notes. These are perfectly safe.
"Let me heal you."
She eyed the vials suspiciously once more, then relented, her eyes closing softly as she gently pushed back against his ministrations.
Solas smiled, letting himself take her in for a moment longer before instructing her to lie back down and taking one of the potions.
Lyrium never tastes good. It was metallic and earthy, with a sharp sting that Solas welcomed as a reminder of its origin. But he would not—could not—refuse the help it gave him, especially if it meant healing Ellana faster.
He sat, crossed legged next to her on the bed, and waited for the potion to work. Adan would eventually find a formula that increases the speed at which the potion worked so they could use them in battle, but for now it was still useful for recovery.

Slowly but surely Solas felt his mana return. It began as a warmth in his stomach, that soon spread to his chest. When the tingling heat of flowing magic reached his fingers he knew he was recovered enough to heal Ellana without any drawbacks. He opened his eyes to meet Ellana's gaze; she was smiling softly at him, her face half engulfed in a pillow.
"What?" He whispered sharing a small smile of his own.
"Nothing, it's just, you looked so peaceful.
It made me happy."

Solas stepped back to watch Ellana dress, letting his eyes roam as she stripped out of the shift they had dressed her in when treating her fever, but hovering close enough lest she need his help. She was a collage of bruises. Deep purples, greys and browns mottled the skin across her chest and back. Angry. They hadn’t bloomed when they had changed her out of her armour; seeing them now, he was worried that he had been too rough with her earlier when he pinned her to the bed to kiss her. The last thing he wanted was for his love to be associated with pain.
If he weren’t so weak, he would heal her, but it took everything he and Adan had to keep her fever from becoming dangerously high. His mana reserves were already low after waking from uthenera; they had been practically exhausted by lending his power to Ellana to aid in halting the Breach.
Ellana didn’t seem to notice, or if she did, she paid them no heed. She walked over to the small wash station set up for them in the corner of the room and reached for a flannel. With a flick of her wrist, the bowl started steaming, and Solas winced as she hissed at the feeling of the warm flannel easing over her aches and pains. She moved the flannel slowly, often pausing to massage the warm cloth in circles over her skin, loosening knots her time unconscious had tied into her muscles. She reached her shoulder, took a deep breath, and stopped, dropping the cloth back into the basin with a splat.
“Ma halani, vhenan?” She pouted, holding out the flannel to him.
“Ma nuvenin.” He placed a gentle kiss on the crook of her neck as he glided the flannel over her shoulder blades, working it in circles, gently massaging the places he could see unbruised, creamy skin. “Did I hurt you?” he whispered, surprising himself with the pain laced in his words.

“No, vhenan,” Ellana sighed, her eyes fluttering shut at his ministrations, “Whatever you and Adan did, I feel no pain. My muscles are just too stiff. I can’t reach my back.”
“Good,” he replied, cleaning her bruises as gently as possible, “when that changes, you must tell one of us. I can’t bear to see you in pain.”
She nodded to him, taking a dry cloth to towel herself. He slipped it from her hands to take the duty himself. Working from her fingers, up her arms and over her shoulders, back, and chest, diligently kissing each as he went.
“If you continue like that, vhenan, we’ll be here for hours, and I’m scared the next person to walk in on us will be Cassandra,” Ellana said, her voice barely louder than a breath. “There’s only so long she can be expected to listen to Roderick after being told I’m awake.”
He gave her a final kiss on the center of her forehead vallaslin, and reached for the clean underclothes that had been delivered earlier. “Ir abelas, vhenan, we should not make the Seeker impatient,” he said, handing the underclothes over, “I believe an interruption from her would be something none of us could recover from. For a connoisseur of Varric’s romance serial, she is certainly embarrassed easily.”
The bottommost layer of her armour was a simple soft leather, designed to be skin-tight and supple, to give protection and allow for the full range of movement needed to wield her staff. Despite her stiffness, Ellana slipped the top and leggings on with practised ease, then sat on the bed to wrap her feet as he retrieved the next piece of armour.

“And you wouldn’t be?” He choked at her words, his fingers slipping on her mail layer, sending it clinking to the floor. His ears burnt as she laughed at him, bright and carefree, reminiscent of a simpler time they would never be able to return to. Rolling his eyes, he bent to pick up the chains of well-worn summer stone.
The mail was by far the most intricate part of the armour, though it certainly didn’t look that way. It was a single piece with a high neck and fitted arms and legs. She stepped into it through the open back and sighed at the dozens of clasps that needed to be fastened. He had seen her don and doff this armour, unaided, hundreds of times, even when her fingers were slick with blood and blue with cold, though she also tended to keep most of the mail clasps fastened. Her pride over being able to dress unaided is why a distinct note of pleasure turned in his stomach when she let his hands take over from her struggling ones to clip the mail into place.
He kissed the crown of her head and, smiling into her hair, replied, “When it concerns you? Never.”
She laughed, “I see your ability to sweet talk hasn’t diminished at all.”
“An ‘ability to sweet talk’ presumes I can do so for anyone else, vhenan. I was known as many things in Elvhenan, but a sweet talker was not one of them.”
“I find that hard to believe, Solas.”
“It is true. People would say I was hotheaded, enigmatic—even passionate—but never a sweet talker.” He gently turned her so she could face him and cupped her cheek. “I never had anyone I wished to… sweet talk.”
“Fenedhis, Solas,” tears gathered in her eyes; she blinked them away. “How are you making getting dressed so difficult?” she said, throwing her arms around his neck and drawing him down into another kiss.

“Simple, I have missed you, Ellana,” he said against her lips with a sad smile.
“You’re here with me,” she replied, resting their foreheads together, “And this time, I’m not letting you leave.” The sincerity in her eyes dissolved into mirth, “Now, pass me my skirts.”
He chuckled but did as she bade him, patiently helping her arrange the layers of leather and cloth as she liked before assisting with fastening the leather cuirass.
She looked at the pile of armour still waiting on the bed, and her shoulders sagged slightly, “Belt, pouldrons, greaves and then bracers…I don’t remember there being quite so many steps involved in putting this armour on,” she sighed.
“How long…?”
“The Exalted Council.”
Six years, not even a drop in the ocean of his long existence, and yet, it felt like a lifetime. “Ir abelas, vhenan.”
“Solas, please. Don’t apologise for saving my life.”
“Noted, but still, I will attempt to save your arm this time.”
Ellana paused, her marked hand curling around his arm, squeezing it just this side of painful. She looked up at him, her eyes wide and wet, flickering between hope, determination, and fear. “Do you think it’s possible?” she whispered, her voice raspy.
“I do not know,” Solas replied honestly, “But if we can save the orb, then I believe there is a good chance.”

“And you’ll be gone for weeks? Don’t you worry we’ll forget all about you?”
Her gaze trailed slowly up from his lips to his eyes. She blinked lazily, her head tilted to the side, and Felassan felt heat rise rapidly in his chest and travel straight to his groin. His breath wavered, stuttering under her scrutiny,
“Not really,” she said with a sly grin and leant up to whisper in his ear, “but if you’re worried you’ll forget all about me, then why don’t I give you something to remember me by?”
A brief smirk was all the warning he got before she kissed him, soft and tentative, a shy brush of their lips that caught him completely by surprise. So bold and in such a public place!
She looked at him, softly enquiring, her eyes searching for any hint that he would reject her advances. When he didn’t move away, she kissed him again, longer this time, still just a press of their lips together, but she lingered against him as though asking permission. He gave it, pushing off the wall and curling one arm around her head, the other wound down around her waist, holding her to him and kissing her back with abandon.
He let her guide him until his back hit a bookshelf as they shared open-mouth kisses, their tongues searching and teasing one another. Her hands, which had come up to cup his cheeks mid-stumble backwards, now roamed his chest, fingers itching to crawl beneath his shirt. She nimbly undid the buttons of his coat, and he let it fall to the floor as he shrugged it off his shoulders. Felassan moaned into Ellana’s mouth as she pulled at the bottom of his shirt to free it from his trousers but descended into laughter as she gave up halfway, the shirt too long and the trousers tied too tight.

“Need some help?” he asked, still chuckling at her.
She pouted, though her pupils were blown wide with lust, then dropped to her knees, and he had to step back with one foot to brace against the bookshelf at the force of her body leant up against his. “No,” she whined and went to work on untying his trousers, pulling at the cord so hard he was surprised she didn’t rip the eyelets. She pulled his trousers down around his thighs and smiled when she found her quarry.
Felassan’s hard cock sprang free into her grasp, already weeping from its tip. He shuddered as she gently ran her finger down it, from tip to base, feather-light and yet his stomach convulsed with pleasure.
She kissed its head, making him pant with her kitten licks at his slit, “Mmn, are you sure you’ll forget me so easily?” She licked a stripe up from the base of his cock, and he gasped, shaking his head,
“No,” he panted.
“Good,” she chuckled in reply and swallowed him down.
He whimpered, his head rolling back against the bookcase as she enveloped him in warmth. It took all of his strength to stop himself from thrusting forward into her welcoming heat. She would tell him when he could but needed time to get accustomed to his girth first.
She paused, breathing slowly as she tested how much of him she could comfortably take. His stomach clenched as his tip reached the back of her throat. She gagged slightly, then stilled and took him further. He bit down on one hand to stop himself from crying out into the quiet Library and reached out with the other to gently hold her head as she bobbed herself up and down his shaft.

“Leave us.”
“You were supposed to be safe.”
“As far as I see it, the safest place I could be is by your side.”
“I am not the man you knew”
“Says who?”
“I lied to you.”
She huffed a laugh, cocking her head with a small, shy smile, and raising her brow,
“Only by omission.”
He scoffed, turning away from her,
“My plans will most likely kill your friends.”
“They’re our friends, vhenan, and most of the work we’ve been doing is to stop that from happening.
“Stop making yourself out to be the monster you’re not, Solas.”
“You don’t even know what I’m trying to—“
“Then tell me, vhenan. Let me share your burden. You do not have to do this alone.”

She looked down at their joined hands and sighed, “The only dreams I’ve ever remembered are the dreams I’ve shared with you.”

His thumb stilled, “Ir abelas, vhenan.”

She took a deep breath, tears prickling at her eyes and a lump forming in her throat, “Those first few nights after your ritual, before word had managed to reach us, I slept so peacefully I thought you were dead. Then, when Cassandra finally brought news, her first words to me were, ‘I’m so sorry, Ellana’, and I thought, this is it. This is where she’ll tell me that you were gone.

“But she didn’t. She told me about Varric.” He flinched at her words, but she needed to keep going, “And do you know the first thing I felt? Relief.” Her voice cracked, and tears flooded down her cheeks, “How awful am I? I get told one of my best friends is dead, and my first thought is, ‘Thank goodness Solas is okay.’

“I couldn’t even be angry with you; I was too busy being angry with myself.”

Ellana’s heart wept for him and for everything he had suffered, either rightly or wrongly. Yet, as he slept, he looked carefree in a way she’d never seen him. Even when he joined the Inquisition for the first time, he constantly wore a frown or a furrowed brow, even when asleep. At the time, she thought demons plagued him; now she understands it was his guilt and sorrow. Thousands of years of fighting for freedom against tyranny were made worse when that tyranny started using his mistakes against him and his people. And where did it get him? A world devoid of the magic and spirits he so loves but full of the blight he sacrificed everything to contain. His people happily tattooed their faces with the symbols of slavery he fought to set them free from, who remember him as nothing but a liar and betrayer and who used his name as a curse. It would be enough to drive anyone into despair, and yet he had changed. She had changed him. Their love had changed him, but it still hadn’t been enough to drive him from his duty.

She remembered the anguish on his face as the fragment of Mythal had appeared in front of him, how he bowed, how he made himself smaller than she thought possible in front of her. How he had held the dagger out to her and expected her to strike him down for his failures.

She smiled at the blissful expression of nothingness on his lax face and hoped that whatever peace that fragment had given him would continue as they forged a new path forward.
