...assess the strength of presented data based on analysis of the figures. E.g. if I was a reviewer for this paper, I would look at this fig and dismiss the paper out of hand, because the maps are nonsense. This is an extreme example, but similar principles apply to analysis of most #structbio data.

This is an excellent meeting for #structbio folks in the northeast & tristate area! Great lineup 🤩
The free and open and INGENIOUS format (which dates back to the 70’s) of the PDB file and associated analysis code for #structbio is completely under appreciated. PDB predates Genbank by a decade! People dedicated their working lives to overnight shifts at the synchrotron to collect these data.
Using Federal funding, we described for the first time, the architecture of the Pentameric subunits of the HIV capsid and how they differ in binding to the rest of the capsid which is important for nuclear entry and drug binding, and we show this structurally. #structbio #FundScience
Friendly reminder, a model does not have a resolution; a map has a resolution. A model has spatial variance, rotamers, populations, etc. The map has resolution(s), threshold, density falloff, any number of correlation coefficients, etc.
Please, do not assign a resolution to your model.

And we're live! This was actually the first project I started in my PhD, a little over 3 years ago when I joined the Pornillos lab for #HIV #StructBio in February of 2021. Shifted focus to a more high profile project, but methods were developed specifically because this mutant was so weird! #cryoEM

Allosteric regulation of quaternary structure in the HIV capsid. Mutational analysis of a binding site may have long range effects on a protein even if the tertiary structure is seemingly unchanged, but seeing is believing. #structbio #cryoEM
