I hate the Introduction, it implies that Modern #Mammals descended from other lineages of #Synapsid cousins that died off long beforehand, despite the fact that we are #Therapsids.

A gorgonopsid-like creature covered in white plates and fur, with colorpoint markings, is lying atop of a rock. Below the rock is a little piece of clear lake water with red lotus flowers scattered around. The creature is growling, its muzzle snarling, its claws clenching the rock it is perched upon.

A comm for @kselenavonta.bsky.social with a majestic creature! It is a dreptann, a closed species based off gorgonopsids!

I haven't had the energy to put up a toy lately, but that needs to change. Tomorrow I will come home from work and flop on the #gorgonopsid.

Inostrancevia was a #gorgonopsian - a group of highly successful non-mammalian #synapsid carnivores that existed through much of the #Permian. They were among the first terrestrial predators that specialised in killing & eating large prey, evolving large "sabretooth" canine teeth.

Dinocephalians sit on the #synapsid branch of the animal evolutionary tree, making them distant relatives of mammals. Dinocephalians were one of many clades of synapsid that diversified in the mid-late Permian that are collectively together known as #therapsids.

I remember as a kid thinking Dimetrodon was a dinosaur, only later to learn it is NOT! Dimetrodons were a type of synapsid, not related to dinosaurs at all!

Original post on mastodon.social

I just argued for 10 minutes on Discord about whether the Edaphosaurus is a synapsid (correct) or a therapsid (incorrect).

It's a Linux server.

Granted, I started the poll for best dinosaur that included the Edaphosaurus as a joke vote, with clear indication that it's not a dinosaur, but still […]

Dimetrodon was a sail-backed, prehistoric reptile from the Permian period, known for being a top predator. Though often mistaken for a dinosaur, it's more closely related to mammals.

A pair of chunky synapsids get stuck on a dead end of what should be the cave's entrance.

I tried to get it done while watching JW: Dominion because I wanted to rewatch/finish the movie for some reason.
