The cognitive dissonance arising from a lofty dharma--full of big words such as bodhicitta, great compassion, all sentient beings, don't kill, don't harm, and so forth--exceeding our will and lazy capacity is how the dharma plummets in a short time from realized to merely transmitted to farce. How much do you really care about other sentient beings? When limited by conditions such as geography, climate, scarcity, poverty, precarious survival, genuine dependence on alms or the dole, and so forth, the bodhisattva does what s/he has to do.
