the first few paragraphs of a book in process. What if was a dangerous drug, one Rowan struggled not to become addicted to. Everyone asked themselves what if. What if they were taller, what if they were smarter? What if could occupy your thoughts and drive you mad. It could consume you. What if you had married another man? What if you chose to specialize in illusions rather then potions? What if you had chosen to research pyromancy instead of chasing after chronomancy? It was enough to drive people to drink, and working in the Last Chance Tavern was enough to expose Rowan to the addicts of the worst sort. Folk talking moodily about lost chances to be adventurers. Bitter lovers wishing they ran off with someone else. Magic users mouring the lost lessons. What if affected everyone around Rowan. Even her coworkers and boss fell victim to it. She tried not to overdose herself, even as her own thoughts spiralled.
