Then the man in black pulled down his mask, and Jimin saw he was beautiful. Not just beautiful – achingly captivating, tender. Jimin had wanted, <i>needed</i> it to be the gloating face of a heartless killer, but he was almost disappointed to see that the man who killed Cha Dohun was young and pretty, like a rare butterfly you can’t stop staring at. There was the refined mouth with its perfect cupid’s bow, the proud nose, the smooth, fire-lit skin that glowed like sunstone — and the eyes. Against the backdrop of his stunning face, they were gentle, almost <i>kind</i>. <I>How?</i> Jimin was left wondering. How was <i>this</i> the man who had taken a life in three silent, effortless movements? What had brought him there? Who had taught him to kill so young and stay so calm?
The alpha must have felt Jimin’s eyes boring into his skin because for a second he glanced at the omega without breaking his flow of dry, harsh-sounding words. They locked eyes and Jimin refused to break the contact; just for a split second he seemed uncomfortable, insecure even, before he looked back at his interlocutor, as if nothing had happened. Then he stopped talking and the tattooed omega frowned. Crossing his hands behind his back, he stepped forward. Close enough for the Duchess to hear him without having to raise his voice, but far enough to keep out of reach of Jimin’s kicking legs. “What’s your name?” he asked in native Kish, the vowels curled with the accent of the Mark. “I’ll never tell you, dog!” Jimin spat at him, but he missed. “Fuck you, traitor!”
The omega barked out an order in Deshran and the men holding Jimin tightened their grip, one of them yanking his head to the side to prevent another spitting attack. The tattooed man stepped up and grabbed Jimin’s hand, inspecting his rings. He turned the mating ring’s sapphire engraved with the crest of Pack Jeon in the candle light, tracing its outline with the tip of his finger. “This is Duchess Jeon,” he said in Deshran. Taehyung’s jaw slackened. Hadn’t he known all along?
