Only you and your charming cousin would speak with me, and you were clearly not part of the proceedings. Lemuel: Then... what kind of thing did you expect to discover? DePizan: Mr. Rasmussen, it is my duty to protect New Byzantium from her enemies. I dedicate myself to this duty wholeheartedly, whether those enemies be among the stars, or walking her streets, even dwelling in her houses. Lemuel: But... the Lords Merchant? DePizan: It's possible. I had heard whispers of an untoward enterprise. But in the end, it amounted to whispers only. Lemuel: It was Lord Tochville.

panel 1. Lemuel and another crewman carry a barrel up a staircase to an upper deck. Caption: Lord Arome's gala caused my vague misgivings to harden into stone. I felt wholly unable to live amongst the Earthborn. The ways and wishes of my own people were hidden from me. panel 2. Lemuel is inside the engine room, pumping a large bellows. Caption: I suppose it had always been this way, but I had imagined I would one day find my place among men. Instead, events had widened the gulf that kept me seperate. panel 3. Lemuel is on top of the balloon, at the edge of the vent, performing some maintenance on a pulley. Caption: Now I wanted no home but a sailing ship. Burn the phlagranite, the ship rises. Vent the balloon, she lowers. Loose the sails, she follows the currents. Such was a life I could comprehend. I stayed aboard The Peregrine, working with the harbor crews to keep her floating snugly at dock level, waiting for the day we would put sky beneath us. panel 4. Admiral DePizan and Lieutenant Gilmoor approach the ship's cargo door, and address a sailor inside. Caption: We remained untroubled by New Byzantium's intrigues, save for one occasion. The carriage moves off before Emma can reach it. She stands and watches it go, holding a masquerade style mask that Denumar was wearing earlier.

I could summon no words for ther assembled visitants, but Lord Arome and Denumar between them supplied a colorful, if wholly inaccurate, account of our adventure. panel 2. Arome: Once the turnbox is loaded with phlagranite, you simply light the fuse, and then stand well back. it will do the work of a hundred men! Morris: It is ingenious, my Lord. But if I may... it seems better suited for Earth-bound forests than the jungles of Venus. Alanthus: Nonsense. A forest is a forest, and they will all fall to these marvelous blades. You are a fine sailor, Captain, but you are no machinator. Denumar: Indeed, Morris! Leave the miraculous concoctions to the savants! Attendant: Your Lordship, Captain. I've brought him. panel 5 Arome: Is this your man then, Captain? Denumar: Delighted, Lordship, delighted. Morris: No, Lord Arome. Rasmussen is this man. Lemuel: I'm honored, your-- panel 6. Denumar drops into an absurd low bow. Arome: Then who is this? Denumar: The right honorable Count Denumar, at your service. Morris: He also survived the attack, but at the cost of his faculties. panel 7 Arome: Two survivors? Why didn't you say so? It's double the treasure you proffered! Denumar: Triple if you include-- oh bother, I've dropped my mask.
