This is a close up of a costume (for the stage) that is being hand knitted from cotton string.
They’ve told me it is usually used for the backs of carpets.
It is off white and it’s Reverse Stocking Stitch with some deliberate holes ‘flea bites’.

I’m not enjoying this job - the string has no ‘give’ and it makes my hands hurt

This close up shows some red brown - (the colour of a red squirrel) hand knitting in plain Stocking Stitch.

It is knitted from Rowan ‘Kid Silk Haze’ which is mohair with 30% silk. I’m knitting this held double - 2 strands together but it is still like knitting with wisps.

This will be a lady’s garment in a movie - and I have to make 2 - as one will be ‘broken down’ because the character is having a hard life.

#showmeyourknits - it’s What’s on Your Needles #whatsonyourneedles this week. I’m working flat out on 2 costume commissions right now - tight deadlines! Not my designs & I can’t show you much but there’s quite a contrast ‘tween them … one is string - the other fine & luxurious #handknitting #knitsky

One completed sock in spring colors alongside the toes and partial foot of its mate on a circular needle. The toe, heel, and bind off are in a tonal purplish pink. The self-striping yarn for the rest of the sock has stripes in six pastel colors separated by thin grey outlines. The first stripe matches the purplish pink of the heel, and then there are pink, cantaloupe, grey-green, pale green, and light green. The slip stitch pattern on the leg and the top of the foot are loosely based on Stephen West’s Rain or Shine socks, and the texture is lined up to the yarn colors as they emerge in the style of Fatimah Hinds’s Serendipitous Journey socks.

The completed first sock on my outstretched foot, with a clear view of the top of the leg, foot, and toe. Between the solid-color portion of the toe and the ribbing at the cuff, the fabric has a texture reminiscent of basket weaving or brickwork. I achieved this with three rounds of reverse stockinette for each stripe and either one or two rounds of stockinette in between to keep the texture roughly synched with the color changes. Staggered slip stitches in the reverse stockinette strips divide each bumpy stripe into little five-stitch rectangles stacked like bricks. The ribbing at the cuff is 1 x 2, so that the columns of knit stitches line up with the slip stitches.

The finished sock on my foot again, but in side view. Here, the heel and a bit of the bottom of the foot are visible. Since the sole of the sock is plain stockinette, this angle shows the unadulterated self-striping pattern, with the single round of grey in between the pastel stripes. I have only seen this outline effect in sock color ways from Lollipop Yarns, and it’s one of the reasons I’m so sad this independent dyer has disappeared. If you know of any active dyers who do this effect, please tell me about them!

I’m knitting the second sock of a pair inspired by the two patterns linked here and a Spring Forward sock kit from the erstwhile Lollipop Yarns. Bring on the flowers!

I've always believed I don have the ability to to make a garment other than a hat or scarf. Welp… going to try this. Four panels into a kimono. Light a candle for me. #whatsonyourneedles #knitsky 🧶

My love-hate relationship with herringbone braid. Second go at it as I haven’t done it in a good while. But can’t argue with what a nice detail they are. 🧶 🧦 #whatsonyourneedles #knitsky

I've had this cowl on the needles since 2021, when I took a day off work to rest from working through the worst of the pandemic. I remember knitting on a beach with a fly-filled back wind and feeling so grateful to be there.
