A crossbill at the top of a vertical thin spruce branch, looking to the left with a blue sky background. His head and breast are pink, giving way to streaked gray and white on his lower belly and back, with with white wingbars. His beak is crossed at the tip, allowing him to winkle seeds out of spruce cones. A winter visitor to Toronto from the boreal forests!

A crossbill perched at the top of a cone laden spruce branch, with an all grayish white sky backdrop. He's looking to the right - a lovely combo of pinks, grays and white wingbars. As his name says, the tips of his beak are crossed, enabling them to winkle seeds out of cones.

White-winged Crossbills seem to be the only winter finch that have had a bit of an irruption southwards this winter. I was very pleased to see a pair yesterday; this is the male #birds #birding #winterfinch #crossbills #Toronto

A closeup of a male Purple Finch perched on the edge of my tray feeder. The background is a blurred mix of fall colours. The birds is almost entirely a soft raspberry colour, with a bit of white on its lower belly. He has bits of seed stuck on his large, thick bill.
