Stefan Bucher’s 344 Questions. Bucher is a designer, author and illustrator in Pasadena CA. Right after he published this he came to speak at our design school as part of a student AIGA event. The book is filled with questions and discussion about the creative process. First edition had a flaw in that if you wrote on the pages as you were encouraged to do, the ink came off on the other side of the page. Bucher released a second edition with different paper and ink, and enlarged with more space to write. (Were these changes based on those exact suggestions I sent him? We will never know.) The cover is a medium cyanish turquoise with typography and question bubbles hand drawn by Bucher in his signature style.
My original copy, signed by Bucher on the interior title page.
An example of the inside pages. When I first got this book I found it difficult to answer most of these questions because they came from a place of economic privilege that I didn’t have. When you’re living in student housing at 47 because you were homeless before you started school, you’re working two jobs with a full course load, and you’re struggling to feed yourself, questions about taking a rest feel impossible. Eventually I hope I will finally be financially stable enough to engage with this book more.
