Stefan Bucherβs 344 Questions. Bucher is a designer, author and illustrator in Pasadena CA. Right after he published this he came to speak at our design school as part of a student AIGA event. The book is filled with questions and discussion about the creative process. First edition had a flaw in that if you wrote on the pages as you were encouraged to do, the ink came off on the other side of the page. Bucher released a second edition with different paper and ink, and enlarged with more space to write. (Were these changes based on those exact suggestions I sent him? We will never know.) The cover is a medium cyanish turquoise with typography and question bubbles hand drawn by Bucher in his signature style.
My original copy, signed by Bucher on the interior title page.
An example of the inside pages. When I first got this book I found it difficult to answer most of these questions because they came from a place of economic privilege that I didnβt have. When youβre living in student housing at 47 because you were homeless before you started school, youβre working two jobs with a full course load, and youβre struggling to feed yourself, questions about taking a rest feel impossible. Eventually I hope I will finally be financially stable enough to engage with this book more.

Iβm detouring a bit for the last dayβs submission.
I should have taken photos of some of the interior pages and show how THICK this tome is. I bought it in 2015 at an art Museum in SoCal. It came with a CD that had hundreds of fraktur typefaces for you to own & use. Itβs glorious. I keep it at my desk and itβs like having a secret tawdry porn stash disguised and displayed out in the open. Iβm sweating just thinking about it. ππ₯΅π The cover is all black with the name of the book in hot pink fraktur type. Two ribbon bookmarks come out of the spine; one black and one hot pink. The edges of the pages are hot pink as well.

A blue hardcover book with no illustrations except a small martini in the lower center in black. Cover text says: New AMERICAN BARTENDERβS Handbook I love the absolute minimalist simplicity of this cover. Also, I bought it because I was going to have a swanky little bar on my gorgeous pnang table from Thailand but itβs never worked out where Iβve been in a place I could do that.

Around the same era when Galileo and Issac Newton were doing their thing, Pu Songling was doing something unintentionally innovative for writing. He gathered and compiled stories (folk tales, rumors, myths, etc) and wrote them down. Some claim he altered the stories so they taught moral lessons. Others say he only copied down what he was given. In the end he had collected an impressive collection of 431 tales of the strange and supernatural. At one time his work was banned in China, but the stories were so beloved people hid their copies. The version shown is the one I own but I confess I feel the art could be a lot better and the cover design is mostly boring. Liaozhai means "Studio of Conversation" or "Studio of Leisureβ btw.

Josef Albers Interaction of Color Revised and Expanded Edition Cover art is a flawless minimal piece of four rectangles all layered over in each other to create new shades. The paperback has remained in print ever since 1971 and is one of the most influential resources on color for countless readers. This new paperback edition presents a significantly expanded selection of more than thirty color studies alongside Albers s original unabridged text, demonstrating such principles as color relativity, intensity, and temperature; vibrating and vanishing boundaries; and the illusions of transparency and reversed grounds.

Japanese Design Motifs 4,269 ILLUSTRATIONS OF JAPANESE CRESTS Compiled By The MASTSUYA PIECE-GOODS STORE Translated by Fumie Adachi Cover is black with red or orange examples of different Daimyo and Shogun crests. Friends, let me tell you this. The Nippon feudal lords understood branding and the importance of a good logo centuries before Terry Heckler ever drew breath or heard of Starbucks. I still draw a lot of knowledge on crafting a solid useful logo but studying these.

THE CROW Written in red serif text. Below it is an illustration done by OβBarr of Eric Draven kneeling beside a stone cemetery angel. Beneath that is the authorβs name written in the same typeface only at a smaller point size. Did I own this before I saw the film? No. Unfortunately. It is a fantastic graphic novel, six times more violent and brutal than the films and a lot more open in its commentary on that violence and brutality. Rumor says itβs based on true events but what those events are changes every decade.

Coffee table book size. The cover is a blend of art styles: art deco, asian, and pop. The illustration is a woman facing the viewer with her head turned, chin in hand, holding a cigarette. A vinyl record covers part of her face almost as if it were a hat. The book is the compilation of three previously published volumes plus new additions. Text is geared more for people in the design and commercial art industry, not collectors or connoisseurs.

This whole series is so much fun to read. Goofy? Yes often (cβmon, an undead T-Rex controlled by drumming in book 7? Get outta hereβ¦) but overall well written stuff. Cover shows an artistβs interpretation of what Harry Dresden the lead character may look like in his overcoat, hat and staff. Title says βStorm Frontβ and has Jim Butcher in equally sized san serif raised red letters.

Back in my goth/industrial days it was cool to read Anne Rice who I thought was boring. I did enjoy this if I remember. Planning on reading again so will let you know if itβs survived well or not. Cover is Poppy Z Brightβs WORMWOOD with a distorted gothy face on it. Face is pale with scratches and the person has dark hair. A promotional quote from Harlan Ellison is also on the cover: Big talent gives off thermonuclear vibes. I can feel themβ¦ This is the voice weβre going to be hearing for a long time. He was pretty incorrect though.
