Photograph of a rowhouse undergoing renovation in the South Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. So much like the previous house I posted, this house was cheaply built, but the land underneath is extremely valuable, so either the homeowner sold out, or they tapped into their equity to renovate.

Black and white photograph of a rowhouse in the South Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. You can tell that we are no longer in the Park Slope neighborhood, because this house is not one of the spectacular brownstones that the neighborhood is famous for. Everything about this rowhouse looks cheap and practical. The foundation is made from cheap cinder blocks. The stoop is made from cheap bricks. The house is clad in cheap vinyl siding. The basement entrance is covered by a cheap aluminum awning. A cheap air conditioner sticks out of the bedroom window. Yet this home is not, by any stretch of the imagination, cheap. It’s current estimate on Zillow is $1.4 million. Sure, an actual brownstone, ten blocks to the north, is worth more than double that, but even still, this thoroughly modest home is somebody’s nest egg and treasure. Sitting on the window sill, next to the air conditioner, is what appears on your phone screen as a tiny black dot. But if you zoom in, you can see it’s a small glass vessel with an itty-bitty plant growing out of it. The Park Slope brownstones typically have huge planters in their windows, and the homeowners pay their gardeners for elaborate displays. Yet this modest house only has a space for the tiniest of plants, which looks like it might fall off at any moment. However, on Street View, the tiny plant is still visible, some five years later.

Dramatic photograph taken underneath the Gowanus Expressway as its six-lane viaduct climbs up high in the air as it passes over the canal. Somewhat reminiscent of Italian Futurism, the viaduct looks like some kind of abstract painting placed in the middle of a Brooklyn street. Yet the structure is not shiny and new as Futurists depicted; it looks old and weathered and rusted. The modernists were focused on destroying the past and replacing it with the new, yet their ultimate failure was that they weren’t living in the future, they were stuck in the present. The works they created are now subject to the same fate as the structures of their forebearers that they destroyed. This section of the Gowanus Expressway has since been repaired and patched and repainted, but ultimately it must be torn down replaced with something human scaled.

A black and white photograph taken underneath an elevated section of the BQE near the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. The photo mainly shows a metal pylon, covered with metal plating, which is attached with an absurd number of rivets. Resting on top of the pylon is a curved girder, again with metal plating and a shitload worth of rivets. There is also a pipe that drains water from the roadway above to a sewer below. The dead space below the viaduct is paved with cobblestones. In the background is a neighborhood that was plowed through by Robert Moses so that he could build this pollution and noise generating monstrosity.

Black and white photograph of a concrete plant near the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. Concrete plants need to be relatively close to construction sites, as there is only a limited amount of time between when the concrete is mixed and when it must be poured, otherwise the product goes to waste. In NYC, trucking in mixed concrete from outside the city is very impractical, so concrete plants like this must be scattered across the city. This plant has a double-wide driveway, so that fleets of cement mixer trucks can load up and head off construction sites and pour the massive slabs that make up the floors of the huge skyscrapers that are constantly springing up. The site is walled up with giant bricks of concrete; this is probably material that did not make it to the site on time, there is nothing left to do with the stuff except try to make some secondary use of it on site.

The first of a diptych of black and white photographs taken on a foggy morning in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This is a grassy field, surrounded by trees, with a pathway meandering up through the frame. There is a sign planted in the field, that says “NO DOGS ALLOWED ON BALL FIELD”, so I guess this is the outfield of a baseball diamond, a fact that will be confirmed by the second photo in this series. I’m a self-taught photographer, and I never learned the Zone System, but if I had, I think that this photo would be an excellent illustration. The trees in the photo are arranged in layers, and because of the fog, their tone drops by about 1–2 stops for each layer. So, the trees in the far background are at Zone VIII, in front of them, the trees are at Zone VII, and the trees in midfield are at Zone V. I think. I really don’t know what I’m talking about. This photo really has nice tonality, though.
The second of a diptych of photos taken on a foggy morning in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. This is a photograph of a backstop of a baseball diamond, with bleachers behind it. Sitting on the fence are two corvids, who look ominous. In the background are some trees that look especially spectacular in the fog.

The first in a diptych of vertical black and white photographs taken underneath the elevated M train in Ridgewood, Queens. This shows one of the steel columns holding up the structure; it’s old and rusted and covered with ivy. Behind it is a sad-looking chain link fence, and behind that are some parked cars.
The second in a diptych of vertical black and white photographs taken underneath the elevated M train in Ridgewood, Queens. This is taken from a different angle; there’s still a chain link fence, but behind it is a small brick structure, probably a garage, covered in graffiti. Above is the elevated train structure, it is rusted, and is crying out for a new coat of paint. The ground is covered with weeds.

Black and white photograph of the front window of a bodega in Ridgewood, Queens. The window is chaotic collage of posters and stickers for stuff that it sells; mostly lottery tickets, beer, and tobacco products. In front of the store is some kind of barrel whose purpose is unknown to me. Next to it are baskets of some kind of cheap product that it sells that the owners don’t seem to be too concerned if they were pinched by some passersby. In front of that is parked a scooter.

Close-up black and white photograph of the façade of a building in Ridgewood, Queens. The building is clad in my favorite siding material, Inselbrik. The asphalt here is probably over 60 years old, is quite weathered, but is otherwise holding up quite nicely. On the top left is a window with an air conditioner mounted in it, encased in an iron cage. There is, inexplicably, a power cord hanging off the AC unit, but it can’t from the AC itself, since it is a two-prong plug The siding has several generations of posters adhered to it, with instructions from DSNY about how to sort recycling. There are also outlines of glue on the wall where other posters once were.
