A black and white photograph shows a basil plant in a terracotta pot, viewed from slightly above. The pot is only partially visible beneath the foliage, allowing the basil to dominate the frame and appear almost suspended in space. Slender stems extend outward and upward, carrying clusters of broad, soft leaves with gently curved edges and clearly visible veins.

The leaves overlap and fan out in multiple directions. Some are sharply in focus, revealing fine surface texture and subtle tonal variations from deep gray to pale silver. Others fall gradually out of focus, dissolving into a soft blur that suggests depth and air rather than weight. This shallow depth of field gives the impression that the plant is floating, lifted away from its container.

The background is bright and uncluttered, fading smoothly from light gray to white, with no visible horizon or grounding elements. Light falls evenly across the basil leaves, emphasizing their organic structure without harsh contrast. The terracotta pot, darker and more compact, anchors the composition just enough to hint at gravity while allowing the foliage to rise beyond it.

The overall effect is calm and contemplative. The image conveys the theme “Get High” through levitation and detachment rather than physical height. The basil appears to hover gently, reaching upward into light, suspended between growth and weightlessness.

An overhead, symmetrical photograph of a triangular patch of lush green grass set against a patio of light-brown rectangular paving stones. The point of the grassy triangle is centered at the bottom of the image, creating a sharp V-shape where the soft lawn meets the hard, geometric pattern of the pavers.

Week 36/52: This week's prompt from the 52Frames weekly photo challenge: Shoot From Above.

The corner of a patch of grass combined with the patterned sidewalk caught my eye on a morning walk.

A stark black-and-white photograph taken from above, where shadow, texture, and human presence intertwine. At the center-left of the frame, the elongated silhouette of a person stretches across rough asphalt, cast sharply by a high sun. The figure is holding a camera or phone in their hand, the device raised, capturing the very scene we are now observing, a reflexive moment where subject and photographer collapse into one. Below, just outside the shadow’s reach, bare feet stand firmly on the ground, toes splayed naturally, grounding the image in both vulnerability and authenticity. To the right, the composition shifts: two stone tiles break through the dark patch of grass, squares of order interrupting the organic chaos of nature. The play of light and darkness defines the atmosphere: the shadow is deep and heavy, almost ink-black, while the textures of asphalt, grass, and stone emerge in crisp detail. Emotionally, the image speaks to self-awareness and presence, the artist revealed not by face but by absence, by shadow. It is a quiet meditation on perception, existence, and the intimate connection between photographer, subject, and the simple act of standing still to observe. The high-contrast tones enhance the surreal quality, turning the ordinary into a statement on perspective. This “shoot from above” is not only about the view downward but also about looking inward, confronting the delicate intersection between identity and the world beneath one’s feet.

Week #36 of 52Frames: Shoot From Above!

Bare feet on asphalt, shadow stretched with camera in hand; a self-portrait from above, where presence is defined by absence and light shapes identity.

This photo is from a drone looking slightly downward. A rusty sky from an early morning sunrise above distant mountains. In the foreground is a reservoir surrounded by trees. A light layer of cloud/fog lays over the land. On the water a few small multi-rower boats can be seen paddling into the distance.

This week’s 52 Frames challenge is “Shoot from Above”. I took these photos from my office in Oklahoma City. I hoped the stairwell shot would show the gap between stairs from my floor (16) to the ground floor, but the gap was too small to show that effect. #52Frames_shootfromabove #photography #nikon

52Frames: Shoot From Above - Toot My Own Horn.

I don't know what about "shoot from above" made me think of a bean mosaic, but here we are. The beans are cranberry beans, yellow-eyed peas, calypso beans, red lentils, black beans, and Peruvian mayocoba beans.

A drone shot looking straight down at a train station. Lots of painted parking spots are visible, and a green-roofed building (the station) is in the upper left corner of the frame. A single train is at the platform, with three of its cars visible in the image.

Drone shot of the Metra platforms at the Aurora Transportation Center, Aurora, IL. Clouds made the lighting fast-changing and uneven.
