In black lettering against à yellow background I’ve cut out the words ‘You Are Loved’ and fixed them to a window of my house. Inside my Christmas tree is visible.

I’ve cut out silhouettes of Mary carrying baby Jesus and Josep standing next to her and fixed them to my front door, lit from within. The silhouettes aren’t immediately obvious!

My Advent windows. From certain angles, Mary might be ignoring Joseph and scrolling down her phone - or carrying some rounded pastries in her hands. The good intention is there! #Advent #AdventWindows

#AdventWindows Day 24, and in the tradition of Advent calendars, it finally reveals the Nativity: this Edward Burne-Jones window from 1887, made by the William Morris Studios in Birmingham and one of four exceptional windows by the artist in Birmingham Cathedral.

Here, from 11-12 West Stockwell Street in #Colchester, we bring you six #AdventWindows & two 'false' windows.

It was once home to Jane & Ann Taylor. Jane is famous for writing '#TwinkleTwinkleLittleStar', reputedly after viewing the night sky from one of the attic windows...

Fine Christopher Whall 1923 window in Worcester Cathedral.
Angel trumpeters flanked by spiritual warrior angel St Michael (Satan/dragon at his feet) as Angel of Judgement (scales in hand), and Gabriel, Angel of Reconciliation, with lily (links to Virgin Mary).

From St Michael and All Angels Church, Ledbury, this 1913 window from William Morris studios of The Good Shepherd, designed by Edward Burne-Jones.
The lower windows include depictions of the Annunciation and of the angelic host appearing to the shepherds.

With the Doctor Who Christmas special just 4 days away, I offer for #AdventWindows Day 21: the Tardis window eyes of Dr Whoot - located at Birmingham Snow Hill Station in 2015 as part of the city’s Big Hoot trail of decorated owls, subsequently auctioned in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

From St Michael’s Church, Alnwick, Northumberland, this large, curious window. I believe it’s Victorian, but the simple. geometric arrangement of the figures - all wearing similar outfits in a limited range of styles/colourways - is almost like a catwalk collection.

Today we bring you not one, but two #AdventWindows from #Colchester.

Or at least, now bricked up false windows that have been painted to give the impression that they're still in use.

You'll find them at Headgate Corner.

Christopher Whall window in St Oswald Church, Ashbourne from 1905. It has the Martyr Saints, Barbara and Dorothea, with St Cecilia lulled to sleep by the organ. As well as his way with fabrics and angel wings, this one is full of symbolism and effects to gaze at and discover.

Stained glass style window display made from black card and Jewel coloured tissue paper, featuring geometric shapes and dove silhouettes - that took us blinking ages to cut out!

Christopher Webb’s window in the Chapel of St John the Baptist in Chichester Cathedral is from 1952, replacing one lost in WWII bombing. It’s spare but I think elegant and focused.
The wreath’s flowers are ones which bloom in Sussex around the Saint’s feast day on 24 June.

Landing window at William Wordsworth’s childhood home at Cockermouth, in Cumbria, looking out over the walled, riverside garden, which is said to have inspired the poet’s love of nature.

Another Revelation window of St Michael defeating the dragon, this time in Norwich Cathedral as a memorial to the fallen of the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment in 19th Century wars.
Above sits Britannia in the regimental badge; with the many engagements commemorated below.

From Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, this window of St George, boasting an unexpectedly dandy moustache, and with the dragon well and truly underfoot. #StainedGlassSunday

When is a window not a window? When it’s a huge photographic copy like this of the Great East Window at York Minster, used to seal off the window during its massive restoration a decade ago - while still keeping visible the sheer scale of both the window & the work in progress.

From Ledbury Parish Church, a somewhat Pre-Raphaelite St Michael in victory over Satan in dragon form (by Christopher Whall, 1905).
Apart from the stunning armour, see the luxuriant angel wings, under which a vortex in striated glass seems to be propelling Satan down below.

Vibrant 1951 West Window in St Michael’s Church, Southampton, replacing one lost in WWII bombing. St Michael, seemingly dressed by Norman Hartnell, is slaying Satan as a dragon, his billowing cloak itself almost like wings, quite apart from actual wings that rise behind him.

For 20+ years Gawsworth Hall in Cheshire held an annual outdoor Gilbert & Sullivan opera, with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company principals. The house itself was the backdrop (here an unlikely town of Titipu), and as darkness fell and the windows lit up, the effect was quite magical.

This large window dominates the library landing of Ripon Cathedral. It depicts Ruth and Naomi within an elaborate gold, shield-like frame, like a wall memorial but in glass. It’s from 1957 and seems on a cusp, being neither wholly traditional nor modern in style.

I love this window in St Andrew’s Church, Weston-under-Lizard, by Christopher Whall (see his use of glass to depict the armour, the drapery of the angels & their fabulous wings). Working on it when hearing of the Armistice, he added the words “1918 Novr.11.11 a.m. Deo Gratis”.

You have to look closely, but this humble window in St Peter and St Paul Church in the village of Mottistone on the Isle of Wight is all the more moving for it, as the simple, large, etched diamond forms the parish war memorial for WWII.

For #AdventWindows Day 7 this memorial window in St Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh to Victorian heroine Grace Darling. Aged 22 she rowed for over a mile with her father through perilous waters to rescue the mariners of the SS Forfarshire in 1838. It celebrates her virtues of charity, fortitude and hope.

#AdventWindows Day 6, and the joyously eccentric central window in the grade-1 listed Egyptian House on Chapel Street, Penzance, built in sarcophagus-style in 1835 (and possibly inspired by the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly in London, which was sadly demolished in 1905).

For #AdventWindows Day 5, this window from the Chapel of St Nicholas at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, built in 1904 to mark 250 years since the execution of Charles I. Between the window and the quite unusual secondary tracery, stand stone figures at either side - as if in an inglenook.

Only just in time for #AdventWindows Day 4, with a window from the “Round Tower” Church of St Michael in Lewes, East Sussex, where many of the windows are by renowned Pre-Raphaelite, Henry Holiday. Given the current weather, I’ve chosen this quatrefoil window of St Swithun. Enough said.

East window at St James’s Church, Milton Abbas, by Lawrence Lee, famous for his work at Coventry Cathedral. An unusually good modern window that respects the tracery, and that you can gaze at - like a sacred “Where’s Wally?”, brimming with figures, buildings, stars & symbols.

One of a series of windows in the restored Pump Room which faces the elegant Buxton Crescent and is now the Buxton Visitor Centre.
The intricate stained-glass design has such a light, sparking touch. I always stop to admire them.

First Day of Advent has arrived! 🎄
So happy our neighbours at Blythe Hill Lane are keeping up the tradition of Advent Windows. 😍
Do you know any other local streets that have them too?
