But what if the story we learned about death is incomplete? What if what we call reincarnation is not a process of spiritual evolution, but part of a much more complex system of imprisoning consciousness? In this video, we will investigate one of the most controversial and fascinating ideas preserved in ancient Gnostic traditions: the possibility that reincarnation functions as a cosmic trap. Drawing on historical sources, texts preserved in the Nag Hammadi manuscripts, and accounts analyzed by scholars of comparative religion, we explore the hypothesis that the cycle of birth, death, and return to the physical body may have been interpreted by the Gnostics as a mechanism for controlling the soul. The research presented in this video is based on historical records such as the writings of Irenaeus of Lyon, who in the second century attempted to vigorously refute Gnostic teachings about reincarnation. In his treatise Adversus Haereses, he described — often with indignation — the belief of certain groups that the soul could be forced to return repeatedly to new bodies, not as spiritual progress, but as imprisonment within a cosmic system controlled by intermediary entities. According to these Gnostic traditions, material reality was shaped by a lesser intelligence called the Demiurge, assisted by entities known as Archons. These cosmic rulers would be responsible for keeping the divine spark present in humanity trapped in the cycle of forgetfulness, birth, and death. True spiritual awakening, in this context, would not be about accumulating lives or experiences, but about remembering who we truly are. But the most intriguing aspect of this hypothesis appears at the moment of death. Many reports of near-death experiences describe similar phenomena: an intense light, profound sensations of peace, and encounters with familiar or spiritual figures. While the common interpretation sees these events as signs of a benevolent spiritual reality, the Gnostic tradition suggests something far more unsettling: these manifestations could be part of the very mechanism that returns the soul to the cycle. This raises a question that has crossed centuries of philosophy and spirituality: if reincarnation is truly a school for the soul, why are we born without remembering anything we supposedly learned before? In this video, we analyze this question from the perspective of the history of religions, Gnostic philosophy, and comparative spiritual traditions. We also explore surprising parallels with other ancient currents of wisdom, including early Buddhism, Hermeticism, mystical Kabbalah, and Tibetan texts about the intermediate state after death.
