RELIEF OF SACRIFICE, 13-9 BCE. ARA PACIS AUGUSTAE Rome's most famous example of Augustan relief work is certainly the Ara Pacis Augustae, the Altar of Augustan Peace, consecrated in January of 9 BCE on the huge Field of Mars, aligned at right angles to the via Flaminia. It's the Augustan monument most heavily laden with levels of meaning. This panel is one of four on either side of the two doorways of the altar enclosure. It shows a priestly sacrifice, with the older bearded priest bare-chested and with his toga piously hooding his head, a regal figure dominating the right-hand half of panel. The left hand shows his two attendants bringing a pig to sacrifice, with a small shrine on a rocky outcropping in the background. It used to be considered a scene of Aeneas sacrificing a sow with thirty (!) piglets to Juno, but it might more likely represent the peaceful priest-king Numa making a sacrifice to the Penates, the gods of the ancestors, a pendant to the more famous relief of Tellus/Pax on the other side of the altar enclosure. The scene doesn't resemble the one in the story of Aeneas (no piglets!), but Aeneas would make sense as a legendary ancestor of the Julian house to which Augustus belonged; at the same time the image of pious Numa, second king of Rome, would well stand in for Augustus, who undertook a major reform of religious practices. The whole panel would have been brightly painted.
