‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II’ Remake Possibly in Development, According to Court Documents
Reputable gaming insider Stephen Totilo has put together an eye-opening report on Game File detailing why _Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II’s_ planned Switch DLC was cancelled, and how there was/still is a possibility for a full remake of the game. The report looks through court documents from a lawsuit over the DLC’s cancellation, pointing fingers at Disney, fans suing for false advertising, and which developer is possibly working on the remake.
To get caught up, gaming studio Aspyr was set to release DLC for the Switch version of _Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II_(KOTOR). The DLC was to be an official release of a mod that added “cut” content from the original game that was previously only available on PC. However, that DLC for KOTOR II never saw the light of day. Aspyr apologized and offered fans who bought the Switch port a free game as compensation. However, some went further and sued for false advertising.

Years later, new details are emerging, showing that part of the reason why the DLC content was shelved was due to proper crediting. In a disclosed email from Michael Blair, an executive at Aspyr, he told Zbyl and Hassat Hunter (two of the creators behind the original mod) what was going wrong:
> “In our efforts to credit everyone who contributed to the mod, we have spooked Disney legal and now they have put a new blocker in place.”
Considering that the mod was community-built, proper crediting would mean tracking down dozens of volunteers and modders, some behind online usernames. Forgetting or omitting someone could become a legal nightmare. Totilo writes that this task of properly crediting everyone was “insurmountable,” and that Disney had to put a stop to it, despite years of the developers trying to overcome it:
> “The new blocker was a prohibition on releasing the Restored Content DLC for Switch without further clearances around who actually made the mod. The blocker proved insurmountable. That’s despite extensive and at times experimental efforts by Aspyr throughout the rest of 2022 and early 2023 to find a way to please Disney and its subsidiary Lucasfilm Games, their long-time partners in Star Wars game development.”
That’s not all, however, as the court documents revealed that an unannounced KOTOR II remake was/still is in development. The project is under the codename Juliet. And the studio behind the project is Mad Head Games, working under/with Saber Interactive, and Aspyr is no longer working on either KOTOR remakes. These documents don’t say whether or not the KOTOR II remake is still in development. However, in a deposition given in March, Douglas Reilly, Vice President of Lucasfilm Games, details all of this while stating that it was, at least, planned and considered:
> “Juliet was the code name for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, you know, keep the story and the characters and the general—the general content of KOTOR II, but remake it for modern hardware and modern machines with updated graphics and all those kind of things. It was something we were discussing with Aspyr.”
Reilly later stated that, as of March, Juliet was still “technically on the roadmap.”
As of the time of this writing, the announced KOTOR 1 remake is still in the works at Saber Interactive, even though nothing has been shown past the initial 2021 reveal. While a KOTOR II remake has not officially been revealed, it should also be noted that Obsidian Entertainment, the makers of the original KOTOR II, look to be gearing up for a major, unannounced project, having signed back on major RPG developer Tim Cain back on to its full-time employment. Might this point to a possible KOTOR II remake coming from Obsidian? That’s purely speculation from my end, but only time will tell.
