✨ Eagle Nebula – The Pillars of Creation in Gold & Turquoise

Here we see one of the most iconic structures in the cosmos – the Pillars of Creation, embedded in the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) in the constellation Serpens. These gigantic gas and dust formations are star-forming regions – enormous pillars shaped by the light of young stars.
What we see here happened around 7,000 years ago. And perhaps what we consider to be ‘creation’ is long gone.

Taken with the remote telescope of the Vienna Working Group for Astronomy at the legendary Hakos Astrofarm in Namibia – it was my tenth session, and a very special one. Here I can see most clearly the difference between my own many photographs of this nebula taken from my city balcony – Namibia's sky is simply hard to beat 🙂

This gold-turquoise edition was created with a modified SHO colour scheme – it shows the ionised gases in a new light. I am particularly impressed by the close-up, in which the fine structures of the pillars stand out clearly from each other. I didn't think I could bring out so many details at this focal length in the crop! Here are some more lights for more depth, and... Well, it's not going anywhere 🙂
