Maple Leafs Finding Ways to Win Even When Outplayed On Friday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs were outplayed by the New York Rangers and might not have deserved to win the game. Yet, somehow, they pulled it off by a score of 3-2. The Rangers dominated the game in almost every category—yet the Maple Leafs managed to find a way to come out on top. It isn’t the first time this season the Maple Leafs have won a game they probably deserved to lose, and it seems to be happening more regularly. **Related:Ron Francis’ 5 Best & Worst Moves as Hurricanes General Manager** How come? Could this kind of win be a new way of playing for the team? If so, that bodes well for the playoffs. It’s a style built more on push (hard work) than perfection. But, more importantly, does it signal success for the Maple Leafs going forward? ## The Numbers Don’t Lie: Rangers Dominate, Maple Leafs Escape Looking at the numbers of the game, it’s clear the Rangers were in control. They led in nearly every statistical category. According to naturalstattrick.com, the Rangers led in Unblocked Shot Attempts (69%), Shots (68%), Scoring Chances (70%), High-Danger Scoring Chances (61%), and Expected Goals (71%). The Maple Leafs were thoroughly outplayed, especially with their third line (Max Domi, Bobby McMann, and Nicholas Robertson) struggling. The trio combined for just one shot on the net and were out-chanced 10-1. It was clear that Toronto’s victory wasn’t built on dominance. Still, they found a way to win, even when the numbers seemed stacked against them. ## Matthews Line Steps Up as the Bright Spot Despite the struggles from most of the team, the Auston Matthews line was the one bright spot. They were the only line to post positive numbers in this game. Matthews and Matthew Knies finished with a 5-1 High-Danger Scoring Chances differential, while Marner posted an impressive 6-1. With the Rangers generating scoring chances seemingly at will, the Matthews line made the most of its chances and carried the team to the win. **Related:Best NHL Players to Make the Switch Between Defense & Forward** Their performance was a reminder that the Maple Leafs have the core talent to shine in key moments, even when the rest of the team isn’t clicking. ## Stolarz Steals the Show, and Goaltending Wins the Day While Knies might have earned first-star honors, Anthony Stolarz was undoubtedly the Maple Leafs’ best player on Friday night. The tall goalie was stellar and earned his fourth straight win since returning from a knee injury. During the streak, the 31-year-old has allowed 10 goals on 132 shots for a .924 save percentage (SV%). His play was the difference in this game, keeping the Maple Leafs in it despite the Rangers’ offensive pressure. Anthony Stolarz, Toronto Maple Leafs (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers) Here’s how Stolarz’s season is shaping up. In 21 games, he has a record of 13-5-2, a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.21, and a SV% of .927. He leads the NHL in SV% and ranks fourth in GAA. With numbers like that, he’s likely to continue being a key factor in the team’s success moving forward. This win perfectly shows how strong goaltending can steal a game. ## Myers Steps Up as an Unexpected Contributor With Oliver Ekman-Larsson (OEL) leaving the game late in the third period due to injury, Philippe Myers stepped up in his absence. Myers played 17:26 of 5-on-5 ice time, leading the defense in that department. He was the only blueliner with positive numbers for Expected Goals (52%) and High-Danger Scoring Chances (63%). That’s not bad for a player who was initially the seventh defenseman on the depth chart. **Related:Maple Leafs News & Rumors: Tanev, Matthews & Trade Deadline Choices ** While Myers wasn’t used on the penalty kill, his play at even strength could become crucial if OEL’s injury is serious. His performance was a pleasant surprise, just another example of how unexpected players can step up when needed. ## The Maple Leafs’ Win Over the Rangers Was Built on Resilience Given how Friday’s game played out, it wasn’t a game the Maple Leafs should have won. They were outplayed in nearly every area, yet they found a way to win. Stellar goaltending, a strong performance from the Matthews line, and unexpected contributions from Myers all combined to give Toronto the edge. The game was far from pretty, but they got it done. Maybe that’s the key for the Maple Leafs moving forward—a team that doesn’t always have to dominate, but can still win through sheer hard work. Could this be the start of a new Maple Leafs mentality? One that’s built less on perfect play and more on finding ways to win, no matter what? If so, this game could be a sign of the resilience that could push them to more success.
