the oranges have been covered by a book cover and a paragraph of text. the oranges' signs now tell you: "Wicked by Gregory Maguire. Disgusting, unfortunately. A book with such a promising plot and premise ruined by pedophilic writing. And that's not to mention the grossness of the characters (Boq is quite literally a stalker) and mythology (drowning in urine? piss as a rite to language? why?). There's a lot of nonconsent and victim blaming, and the women characters sound like caricatures of a male fantasy. How do you have a society of matriarchal royalty but be so deeply embedded in patriarchal gender ideologies? Ableism and racism deeply embedded, too. I don't think I've hated every character in a book so much. Its entire message seems to be "look, everyone is evil and gross and if you tell me we can be better than this, you're the problem." The book is full of catastrophist philosophy and discourages readers from believing in something better. As if we cannot ask for a kinder world. As if asking people to consider their impact is an unforgivable intrusion. I typically enjoy philosophy, deep characterization, and political world building, but I genuinely think 80% of this book could have been cut and it would have been better for it. It is so clearly meant to be a philosophical work, and every philosophical question it raises, it fails to actually engage with on any level beyond "humans evil, get over it." I truly am shocked that the musical written after this book could have come from this vile work." You notice after reading that the oranges have written a note in red: "the draft...swipe for editing notes!"
the oranges deliver you the same review, but they've taken a red pen to the screen. all but the first two words have been crossed out, leaving a concise review of Wicked by Gregory Maguire: "Disgusting, unfortunately."
