Toxicity
Oil sands fluid tailings contain many toxic compounds. Some of these substances have recognizable names such as: benzene, lead, mercury, arsenic, nickel, vanadium, chromium, and selenium. Toxic tailings also contain naphthenic acids (NAs), phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and many more.
There are hundreds of components in the tailings "ponds" of the oil sands.
