Bill's family posted the sad news on a FaceBook post, saying he passed away at home in Portola Valley, surrounded by family. Atkinson is survived by his wife, two daughters, stepson, stepdaughter, two brothers, four sisters, and his dog, Poppy.

Il y a quelques années, William Dana Atkinson était revenu sur certains moments de sa prolifique carrière chez Apple où il entra en 1978. Atkinson y a créé MacPaint, le logiciel de dessin qui démontrait à lui seul la dimension révolutionnaire du Mac et HyperCard, qui pouvait mettre la programmation à portée de presque tout le monde et fonctionnait sur un principe de navigation hypertexte. Employé numéro 51 chez Apple, il a travaillé sur le Lisa et poussa à l'adoption d'une souris pour piloter le futur ordinateur (lire aussi Lorsque le développement du Lisa avançait à coup de Polaroid). Il avait fait partie de la délégation menée par Steve Jobs qui avait visité a les laboratoires du Xerox Parc. Tout aussi stupéfait que ses collègues par ce qu'il y avait vu, il s'était attaché à imaginer comment récréer cette interface graphique, mais en l'améliorant considérablement. MacPaint. L'une de ses contributions majeures fut la création de QuickDraw, avec Andy Hertzfeld, un système d'affichage 2D révolutionnaire pour l'époque et indispensable pour dessiner et faire fonctionner l'interface du Lisa puis du Mac, avec leurs icônes, fenêtres et menus déroulants capables de se superposer. C'était alors une prouesse technique. Au point qu'après avoir été victime d'un grave accident où le toit de sa voiture fut arraché, Jobs s'était inquiété auprès d'Atkinson de sa santé alors qu'il était hospitalisé. Andy Hertzfeld raconta qu'Atkinson rassurera Jobs en répondant qu'il se souvenait encore comment programmer l'un des éléments essentiels de QuickDraw. Cette bibliothèque 2D ne disparut officiellement du Mac que 20 ans plus tard, avec Mac OS X Tiger. HyperCard : l'un des plus beaux concepts d'Apple Le code source de MacPaint et de QuickDraw est disponible Atkinson quitta Apple en 1990, il n'avait pas suivi Steve Jobs chez NexT. Il alla, en 1996, rejoindre l'équipe de General Magic où fut conçu un système d'exploitation novateur, basé sur des agents intelligents. L'aventure ne fut pas un succès commercial, mais General Magic était une pépinière de talents : Andy Rubin (Android), Tony Fadell (iPod, Nest) ou encore Kevin Lynch (Flash, Apple Watch) pour ne citer que quelques noms. Rangé des affaires informatiques, Bill Atkinson se consacra à sa passion pour la photographie. Les plus observateurs reconnaîtront dans quelques-uns de ses clichés (exemple) certaines petites images qui furent proposées pendant quelques années dans Mac OS X pour servir d'avatar à un compte utilisateur.
