New Research Shows Hair Is Pulled Upward by Cells, Not Pushed from the Root Recent research from Queen Mary University of London and L'Oréal Research & Innovation has challenged the long-held belief that human hair grows by being pushed out from the root. Using advanced 3D live imaging of human hair follicles cultured in the lab, scientists discovered that hair is actually pulled upward by a coordinated movement of cells in the outer root sheath, acting like a microscopic motor. This spiral movement generates the force necessary for hair growth. When cell division was blocked, hair continued growing at nearly the same rate, but interfering with actin, a protein that enables cell movement, reduced hair growth by over 80 percent.
