The image shows a photograph of various species of the thalloid liverwort Riccia and other cryptogams such as mosses and lichens growing on soil. The photograph was taken in Charleville Rock Pools (Queensland, Australia) by Rosemary Purdie.

Grateful to see this beautiful #biocrust on a trip through Canyonlands National Park in the Maze District. It is always a gift to see such intact crust in these remote places

Who is doing #biocrust work in the alpine in North America? Let's talk! I want more field sites here 👇🤩
When we tell people that #biocrust can be a dominant form of ground cover in drylands, it can be hard to picture. Here's a perfect example from Canyonlands National Park in Utah showing how extensive biocrust cover can be!

Had a brilliant time at the Baltic Sea the past two days with colleagues from Uni Rostock and my great student Tobias from @unihannover.bsky.social. We measured #biocrust stability in the field and want to find out if we can correlate coastal dune stability with hyperspectral imaging data.
✅ First #biocrust project started
🎉 Just received my first competitive grant at KAUST!
🌱 And SaudiNet — our collaboration with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification #NCVC — is now officially underway.
This #biocrust research www.frontiersin.org/journals/mic... assessed carbon exhange, an important functional role of biocrusts in the global #carbon cycle. I loved the images that illustrate succession, and was fascinated that the intermediate cyanolichen type exhibited the strongest C fixation.
I gave a presentation about #biocrust showcasing articles from Frontiers topic on "spatio-temporal development and ecological functions of #soil surface #microbial communities across different scales". We got 25 articles, see the editorial. www.frontiersin.org/journals/mic... More to follow...

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way to suppress invasive plants and replace them with #biocrust? We're not quite there, but we're not so far way either. New paper from the DIRT lab (Ecoss & Forestry, NAU) & MPG Ranch. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... @restorationecology.bsky.social
This stunning Syntrichia #biocrust moss kept photosynthesizing for days after the last precip event—showing how crucial winter CO2 capture is in this semiarid ecosystem.
Excited to announce the next International Biocrust Reading Group Meeting! 🪴🌍 We'll meet on January 7th at 17:00 GMT to discuss the latest in biocrust research. Interested in joining? Send me a message! #Biocrust #Ecology #ScienceCommunity @michalaphillips.bsky.social
Oh yeah, and this site also has developed a bitchin' #biocrust, not in spite of #prescribedfire, but likely because of it. This site is productive enough that without frequent fire, the crust would be smothered or fuel loads would be greater and subject to lethal heat from less frequent burns.

blushing scale lichen
Psora decipiens (blushing scale), a terricolous #lichen element of the #biocrust at Smith-Reiner Drumlin #Prairie. It persists despite fire, b/c fire is frequent and fuel loads low, leaving refuges from lethal heat. Fire seems to reduce smothering from litter, probably to the advantage of biocrusts.
...very happy to see so many of my #biocrust friends joining this place every day 🤩
Attention #biocrust people! We are organizing a crust session at the next @eurogeosciences.bsky.social in Vienna. Abstract deadline is January 10th. So what are you waiting for?! Send us your contribution and come to Vienna!
