It looks like this little house sparrow is having a branch of a time! He's really peck-ed the right spot for a good rub. Perhaps he's trying to get a better handle on things, or maybe he just needs to spruce up his beak. He seems very focused on his work, almost like he's trying to make a point! He's probably thinking, "This is a little bit of a rough spot, but I'll make it smooth in no time!" This female house sparrow is performing a behavior called feaking, which is when a bird rubs its beak against a branch or other hard surface. Birds feak for several practical reasons: Cleaning: It helps remove food scraps or sticky residue after eating. Rubbing against the rough bark helps keep the beak sharp and at the proper length, similar to filing nails. It can help remove parasites or old layers of the beak's keratin sheath.
