I do recommend you use your library system to acquire within genre books to read and handle. You can read any version for FREE but be on the wait list for the hardcover version so you can see the best version of each novel including the cover art.

Book data means:
* word count
* chapter word count
* novel structure
* POV
* tense
* map of novel structure
* cliff hangers
* head hopping
* etc.
You can gain all of this information by reading/handling a book. You can identify active agents too.

I talk a good bit about doing book reports on the novels you read. This is because we tend to forget the details. The book report is for you to read later to remind yourself exactly what you learned about your genre.
You should also document the book data.

Comps expose you to book covers.
You can read any version of a novel but your book data should come from the most expensive version printed. These are hardcovers. This is where the publisher spent the most money in design. You need that data.

Book data is information about the book.
Who was the agent for the book? Usually this information is found in the Acknowledgment section of the book.
When was the book published?
What publisher?
What editor.
What author socials are listed?
Join those socials.

Your report should tell you the names of the main characters, a summary of the story and how you think it is similar to the novel you are writing today.
This is the standard book report part of your comp information.
Next, you collect the book data.

When you read a comp you need to take notes. You are going to write yourself a book report. This is so you can refer to that report later in your comps. This is so you can review actual book data as you write. A portion of your report is about story.
