Extended Intravenous Bag Hangtimes and Risk of Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection in an Acute Care Hospital Background: Previously, the recommended maximum hang time for nonadditive intravenous (IV) bag solutions was 24 hours due to a cluster of contaminated IV fluids in the 1970s leading to bloodstream infection. However, in 2002 no recommendation was made, yet the norm of a 24-hour maximum hangtime remains widespread as limited data exist that demonstrate the safety of longer hangtimes. Because of IV fluid shortages, the hospital policy changed from a 24-hour maximum hangtime to 96-hours. To evaluate the safety of extended hangtimes, we used an ecological design to evaluate the relationship between the change in policy on maximum hangtime and central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) rate.
