Its a small thing but the fact that both of these castles are free to visit
with prices rising everywhere & things as simple as a train ride feel like a total rip off, a cruel joke at our expense

Its not entirely clear when exactly it was built thought its believe to be from around the 1220's
possibly by Rhys Gryg who may have built the two castles of Dryslwyn and Dinefwr to pass to his sons after his death
which came in 1234

The 11c castle of Peyrepertuse in the Corbières: the largest of the castles known as "Five Sons of Carcassonne" & a Cathar stronghold during the Albigensian Crusade. It was then taken over by the King of France and became a key defence against the Kingdom of Aragon #castlesaturday

Brougham Castle near Penrith in Cumbria was founded in the early 13th century. The site was previously used by the Romans for a fort called Brocavum.

Because Penrith Castle is in the town park and free to everyone, I think of it as the people’s castle. Then I read that one source says 'It seems most unlikely that it was built not by a baron, but by the inhabitants themselves, for their own defence'.
