Today in #LaborHistory 7/27/1838: 70,000 attended #Chartist rally in New Castle. Soldiers attempted to intimidate them with their bayonets. Many feared things would escalate into another #massacre, reminiscent of the #Peterloo massacre in Manchester in 1819.

So pleased - the appeal to raise funds for a Blue Plaque for the #Chartist newspaper the 'Northern Star' has been successful. In addition to celebrating the newspaper it provides another fitting memorial to Malcolm Chase who campaigned for so long to secure this recognition for the 'Star'.
