“Civil disobedience on conscientious grounds has a long and honourable history in this country…” Lord Hoffman
Why do politicians create legislation that would have criminalised members of their generation, …..and even themselves in their youth….? Remember, #Peterloo ….

Image: Percy Bysshe Shelley / Alfred Clint (After Amelia Curran) / Wikimedia Commons / Public domain. A portrait of Shelley from the waist up, against a dark background. He is sitting with his right elbow resting on a light-brown wooden desk, wearing a dark jacket and an open-necked shirt with a large collar pulled up almost to his ears. In his right hand he holds a white-feathered quill.

In unvanquishable number!
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you:
Ye are many—they are few!

The Peterloo tapestry, a long stretch of cloth covered with items created by the public to commemorate the Peterloo massacre, with a red woollen Liberty cap in the foreground

Musicians in 19th-century costume on stage with guitars, keyboards etc, in front of the image of a heart pierced by a sabre, labelled "Reformers of Peterloo".
Afterwards at 53two we saw Reformers of Peterloo perform Peterloo in Rock, a musical show about 1819 and the fight for democracy (have we won yet?) Featuring the art of @peterloomemorial.bsky.social's Polyp as an ever-shifting backdrop.
One more performance tonight 8pm!

Cover of Shelley's Mask of Anarchy poem.
Percy Shelley wrote about the 1819 Peterloo #massacre in his #poem, “The Masque of Anarchy.” Censored until 1832, 10 yrs after his death. Mike Leigh’s 2018 film #Peterloo is excellent portrayal of the massacre. Many #novels about it, too.

Heard "ThisWeek in History" on #BBCRadio4. Piece on #Peterloo. Surprised to hear it "helped garner support for voting Reform"
Rather surprised this C19th event led to support for F*r*g*. Listened again. It's abt where you put the emphasis. She SHOULD have read it as "support for VOTING reform". Phew
