Her best-known work is Cold Comfort Farm, which showcases Gibbons’ skills as a satirist. Her writing was admired by many of her contemporaries, including T. S. Eliot. Virginia Woolf asked Gibbons to write for a publication printed by Woolf and her husband. The humor in Gibbons' work comes through in stages: first, laughter, then the thought that she is describing people you know, and then the realization that she is skewering you, too. Gibbons was so adept at satirizing writers and writing, that the writers and critics who determine who and which works should be in the canon of English literature have still not made her or Cold Comfort Farm part of it.

A dark and rickety farm house, a loopy bull, and a comically off-kilter sense of looming silliness greet you in the naive folk-style art of this book cover for Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, in bright cheery buttercup yellow against a more sombre forget-me-not blue.
