🌍🌏 Eurasian Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) The male Eurasian Chaffinch is colourful, with a blue-grey cap, rust-red breast, and prominent white wing bars. The female is duller brown/grey but shares the white wing markings. It is widespread across Europe, Northwest Africa, and Western Asia, favouring woodland, parks, and gardens. They are social outside the breeding season, forming flocks. Males have a loud, distinctive song. Eleven subspecies are currently recognised. 2.5 Flash (Edited) Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1) Fun fact: Male Chaffinches have regional dialects in their song! This Common Chaffinch was perched happily on a branch in Somerset. When reading up on chaffinches I found out that male chaffinches apparently have regional accents, young chaffinches learn the local tune from older birds.

A chaffinch sits on a cement wall, leaning over the side. It is a small bird with a grey head and neck. It has a black eye and a black patch just above its silver beak. Its neck, breast, rump, and topside below the neck are all a light orange or rust. The feathers are alternating white and black closer to the body and grey further out and into its tail, which has a little bit of white on the sides.
