Dedham Lock and Mill
?exhibited 1818
Oil paint on canvas
This scene is full of details Constable clearly took delight in painting, from the men on the left of the mill, to the donkey beneath the tree on the right. Its complex interplay of light and dark reveals his growing skill in rendering fleeting effects. The mill and church on the horizon might stand for the Constable family values of hard work and devout faith. The artist's father had recently died, which perhaps prompted him to take up this scene.

Some more pics from Tate Britain’s spectacular TURNER & CONSTABLE, RIVALS & ORIGINALS exhibition.
I went expecting to love the Turners (wonderful of course), but some of Constable’s smaller works really surprised me. #Art #ArtSky #Constable
