7 different versions of a picture. It's Seattle's First Hill Trolley, taken in low light at the end of the day.

First and last try--the original is all midrange grays, the last version has better contrast between light and dark areas.

cutting out an early print with an x-acto

mask on top of glass on top of negative on top of paper (using just regular paper here for illustrative purposes)

results, with a bunch of different variants

this one worked OK. at least, you can see the results of different exposure times on different areas pretty well.

With enlargers, people do burning/dodging/masking, so I decided to see if I could make this work with a #ContactPrint.

hand-tinted image of a vertical-boilered steam donkey engine. it's on top of huge redwood log "skids". there are trees in the background and dry grass in the foreground. the engine is colored rusty brown. the pencil strokes are blurred by brushing water, but are still visible.

this version is colored more simply, regions are almost just solid colors on top of the B&W background.

Tried hand tinting some photo prints. I used watercolor pencils.
In the first/left version I tried drawing pretty precisely, in the right/second version I went for a more cartoony solid-fill look. I think the 2nd way works better.

This a whole roll of medium format film done as a single contact sheet.

Four 6x9 (Brownie) negatives done on a half a piece of photo paper (twice, because the first try came out too dark).

Single image of a steam donkey.

Made some contact prints (these are all 6x6cm or 6x9cm; some may look like enlargements, but that's just because I cut smaller pieces of paper).
The last picture is intentionally printed light because I want to try hand-tinting (and Wikipedia says you should do that).
