It was slow going at first, but joining ASCAP and adhering to the rules of compensating composers, authors, and publishers for their work did result in more money for the people who created and published protected music. The monetary value of music rights has grown throughout ASCAP's history. Recent data show the group’s 900,000 members collectively earned around $1.5 Billion a year in royalties.

On this day in 1914, ASCAP was formed. That’s the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. As a group of music makers and music sellers, ASCAP members were concerned with copyright protections and royalties.
