Have you ever seen any one as pleased as @saralilplants.bsky.social finding some crinoids? Probably not. #FossilFriday #geology #paleontology #fossils #crinoids #jurassic #RobinHoodsBay
Stalked #crinoids were dominant producers of carbonate skeletal sediment during the #Paleozoic. A single crinoid produced more than 135,000 (!!) particles with grain sizes from fine sand to fine pebbles and shapes ranging from discoids to rods.

Wow, what a coincidence! I created an entire collection of objects inspired by crinoids and blastoids. The resemblance might not be apparent at first glance, but it’s there. I call my creation Galactic Fossils.

In the #deepsea, rocky outcrops like these make perfect homes for #corals, #sponges, #crinoids, and the associates that live on them. By growing on a rock or hard substrate, corals and sponges can catch flowing material in the water column for food.

These fascinating fossils look like intricate works of art. 🖼️
Even though they have been entombed in stone for over 150 million years, these delicate creatures look as if they are still swaying with the currents of the sea. 🌊

Fossil seafloor assemblage composed of a pavement of numerous small brachiopod shells, including Gotatrypa, Coolenia & Eocoelia. Amongst the brachiopods are scattered trilobite sclerites (calymenids & encrinurines), small favositid corals, snails, and crinoid columnals. The image shows an area about 30 cm across.
Close up view of the fossil assemblage showing a calymenid trilobite cranidium (upside down) and pygidium, nestled among brachiopods, corals, and other trilobite fragments.

#Fossils on @bsky.app are my bulwark against the current madness & #FossilFriday is a keystone in the wall. This week: more #brachiopods (mostly Gotatrypa) from the #Silurian (~435 MYA) of Anticosti Is., Quebec 🇨🇦 in company w #trilobites, #gastropods, #corals & #crinoids; brachs average ~2 cm across
An articulated crinoid calyx with delicate infolded pinnulate arms and a portion of the supporting stalk, partly prepared from rock matrix. Included scale shows a total height of about 10 cm. The fossil has been whitened for photography with a thin coating of ammonium chloride sublimate. Specimen is in the Invertebrate Palaeontology collections of the Royal Ontario Museum.
A line drawing reconstruction of Rheocrinus in feeding posture, with outstretched feathery arms forming a parabolic fan, facing down-current. The stalk is reconstructed in sections, with the lower bulbous "root" structure showing spike-like outgrowths. From Haugh, B. 1979. Late Ordovician channel-dwelling crinoids from southern Ontario, Canada; American Museum Novitates, no. 2665.
It's hard to function in the face of all the madness but #FossilFriday must go on. So ... complete #crinoids ("sea
lilies") are very rare in the Late #Ordovician (~445 MYA) Georgian Bay Fm of #Ontario 🇨🇦. This beautiful exception is Rheocrinus aduncus Haugh, 1979 @romtoronto.bsky.social ROMIP 36376
