A very large member of the Antelope family is seen standing at the side of an asphalt road with a sign that says One Lane Road Ahead. There are trees in the background. This Nilgai is a male as established by his two straight horns that look to be approximately 5 or 6 inches long. The males are generally 4 to 5 feet tall at the shoulder with a small head and a large barrel-chested body that slopes to the rear. His legs are very long. The nilgai is mostly brown with a white patch at the throat, white patches visible on the inner thighs in this photo and white and black "socks" just above the hooves.

A largish hooved animal that somewhat resembles a pig is taking a step across a wooded trail and appears to stop in mid step to look at the photographer. The animal has a long face with a prominent snout, small ears and eyes and is mostly light and dark gray in color. There is a tuft of light gray standing up between the ears.

This one is going to be hard to describe. Some kind of insect is standing at an angle on a small branch. It has a huge black eye and is mostly light colored with white fuzzy stuff on its head and darker legs. Two of what I think are its back legs are sticking straight up so that they look like antenna. The wings are sticking straight out to the side.

So, I'm minding my business looking for birds in the Rio Grande Valley and ahead of me, crossing the road, are about a dozen of these. What the heck is that?! It turns out that there are an estimated 30-50K Nilgai (Asian antelopes) in the area, imported to be hunted. Who knew? #mammals #critterday
