Now and then, I like to go back and play Civilization VI just for kicks. I've loved the game since the early 90s. I haven't tried VII yet (old dog/new tricks). But my favorite thing about VI is being in Emperor mode, you just get knights and you see your neighbor already has helicopters.

I've been so negligent in my #DailyGood, mostly because there is very little good happening with the avalanche of crap daily. But, as my birthday approaches, I thought I'd share some good from a birthday buddy (but before my time) - The great Faron Young.

A picture of the Jungle Bird tiki cocktail. It is reddish, with lots of ice, in a tall glass with a bamboo straw and wedge of pineapple. Some rum bottles can be seen behind the glass. Image and recipe from https://www.bamboosams.com/post/the-jungle-bird.

The struggle is real to find something good each day. Mostly I'm hunkering down working or rage scrolling. I'm getting back in shape and avoiding alcohol, sugar, most processed foods, etc. (ugh). But, that doesn't stop me from wanting this good. Hopefully soon.

My 1994 Nishiki Optima bike leaning against my garage door. The bike is light green with an orange saddle bag and brown topped tube bag.

Still struggling to keep up with the good, and struggling with the struggle. But today's good is 31 years old and still going strong. Half my PRs are on this bike - not my road bike. #SteelisReal
Thanks to the weather for a break today.

Still reeling from the onslaught of outright destruction, racism, misogyny, stupidity, and hate in this new administration.
But, I saw a post somewhere asking what song instantly made you a fan on first listen. This immediately came to mind.
Billy Bragg - Greetings to the New Brunette
I missed my yesterday's post for... uh... *do you not freaking see what's going on?!?!* um... reasons. #DailyGood is supposed to remind me there's still reasons to wake up and enjoy a smidge of something - anything - good each day. So, thank you Spurs for FINALLY winning a match (since November)!
The cover of John Conroe's "God Touched." The title is at the top in A red and yellow flame color. The image background is the New York City skyline at night from across the river in colors blue and back with a big moon. shining. The authors name is at the bottom in white with "The Demon Accords Series" written beneath.

I usually read at night instead of watching TV. Given the state of *things*, I needed an escape so I started @johnconroe01.bsky.social "The Demon Accords Series" because I wanted fast paced stories of someone just kicking evil ass. In just two weeks I'm 7 books in and it fits the bill.

Everything is overwhelming. I can usually fall back on some finer things to give myself a little break and brief pleasure - unfortunately, pasta and wine are out of the question for the 1st quarter of this year. So, it's up to music for that lift!

Among many other diverse likes and loves, I am a big West Coast Jazz fan. On a chilly Sunday, I love to put on something smooth and swinging and have a cappuccino (yes, that sounds pretentious and no, I'm not, I don't think).
Today it's the massive talent and genius of Hampton Hawes.
A movie poster for The Living Daylights. The title is in the upper left. To it's right is Timothy Dalton as Bond pointing a gun in the famous focal eye used in all bond opening credits. Below the title is Dalton as Bond, again in a circle, with just a head shot of him in a tux holding a cigarette near his mouth. The background for the poster is illustrations of action scenes from the movie - a car with ice outriggers, a horse chase, a tank, and the bond guys. In the bottoms right corner is an attractive blonde woman in a white dress lying on her side.

As I've noted, I'm a 60s spy spoof fan. But that comes from a love of James Bond. Not that he needs defending but, I think Timothy Dalton was a really good Bond and it was the 80s production and writing that mostly failed him.
Best of his two? The Living Daylights. Give it a rewatch.
Yes, I'm doing it for my sanity if nothing else. I post something daily under #DailyGood to remind myself of just those things that keep me balanced and human against the endless tide of horrors.

I need a little boost this Friday. It's been a down week from snow days, a lingering cold, and the general unpleasantness in this country. So to pick me up, I turn to The War and Treaty. A recent discovery (for me) tracking artists on Garden & Gun's Back Porch Sessions. Amazing voices.
An drawing by Daniel Johnston done in a folk style, similar to say a high school drawing or doodle, depicting three skulls across the top of the pieces, each with a difference symbols as their background, and below left, a red woman with green hair, in a red dress, saying in a speech bubble, "Maybe easy living could be just as right. Don't you think?" In the middle of the picture is a three-headed ducks with a lions body. To the right is a man with a very large head that appears to be open at the top like a bowl. He is wearing a brown suit and physically resembles the Frankenstein monster. In the middle below the duck creatures is a spiral of various colors overtop the words, "Rock and Roll" written in red. Image from the internet.
An illustration by Daniel Johnston on a white background. The top of the page is a rectangle made pink marker covered with text that says, "I have faith in things that love and love goes round and always was the strangest most strongest Evil's taboo wins all the time and victory upon victory till the end forever." The drawing consists of two humanoid creatures holding guitars. The creature to the left is green, hairless, and holding an orange guitar. The creature on the right is similar holding a yellow guitar. Between them is a yellow woman with black and blue hair, wearing a pink dress with large blue polka dots. She is wearing red shoes and below her is written, "I understand it may not matter but belief makes me Strong. Daniel Johnston" This image is from the internet.

Ars Gratia Artis - that, to me, is folk and outsider art. For some artists, it's a compulsion. For others, it's their core and why they keep going. No on exemplified this more than the late Daniel Johnston. I miss his simplicity and pureness, in his music and his visual art.

Being sick last week reminded me of being sick as a child. I mentioned the clean sheets and fold-out couch earlier. But when I was sick, I'd get Sprite and then the big cans of this way too sweet punch. But I did love the commercials (and asking my brother if he wanted a Hawaiian Punch).
Today's #DailyGood is a sad one. Garth Hudson, the last living member of The Band, died today. If you were to ask me if I had a favorite band, I'd hem and haw and toss out a few names but always come back to The Band. There will never be another.

An illustration using markers on white paper of an orange cat taking a bath. A sink is to the right, a toilet to the left, and a window is behind the tub and the wall is green. A pink bath mat sits in front of the clawfooted white tub.
Today's #DailyGood I discovered on my refrigerator. Both my kids (teens) love to draw and are more artistic than I am. I found this doodle on the fridge from my youngest (15), which I first thought was a kids book illustration. She was trying out new markers. Very cute.
