Labour's off-rolling crackdown could finally "shed light on a practice that is currently invisible" but must be supported by councils and trusts to work, experts have said. The schools white paper unveiled plans to tighten up scrutiny over pupil movements, and to interrogate the leaders of schools suspected of illegal exclusions or other shady methods to skew cohorts. Kiran Gill, chief executive of inclusion charity The Difference, said this "has been an area of insufficient data accountability". "It shouldn't be up to investigative journalists or brilliant statisticians to highlight where there's a system challenge."

The Geospatial (Land) Enabling Programme is evaluating the advantages of establishing a unified geospatial capability that will support business needs enabling enhanced decision-making by providing comprehensive insights into the environment. Geospatial intelligence can support the understanding of the changing landscape over time and the outcome of certain responses. This is the 'What and Where' view for the past, current and future. There is currently no single source, authoritative view (map) of land across England that can be accessed and shared across the Defra group that meets the needs of the businesses. This not only impacts business and policy outcomes due to the quality and absence of data being used but also the effective monitoring of regulation due to being unable to easily identify who occupies a piece of land and the activity being undertaken.

Giving evidence to the Commons' levelling up, housing & communities committee's inquiry into Oflog yesterday Keith Stevens said including parish and town councils’ data will enable trend spotting and taking preventive action if needed. Cllr Stevens said town and parish councils "are growing in size and importance and we have to have the same control to see what is happening". But data about the sector is "fragmented and held in various parts because we are not part of the data explorer". Oflog's data explorer collates council data and provides comparable information on sector performance. Currently, it has data on indicators like corporate and finance, waste management, roads and adult social care among others.

When the BBC asked every fire service in the UK how many EV fires they had dealt with in the past three years, none could provide a reliable answer because they do not distinguish them from other types of vehicle fires. Instead, some fire services, such as those in Norfolk, Essex, Surrey, Derbyshire and Kent, ran text searches for any reference to the word "electric" in their vehicle fire records. The results of those text searches show there were 59 electric vehicle fire references in 2022-23 across England - up from 30 the previous year. The true figure, says Mr Maher, is likely to be about double that.
