𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): A close-up, portrait of a male great spotted woodpecker's head seen from the side. The sex is identifiable thanks to the red patch on the nape of the bird's neck. It has very visible stripes on both sides of the face and neck, which connect with the breast plumage. Being a likely mature specimen, only the nape is red, while the crown is black; and the breast is not entirely white, but a dirty, cream color. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝗰𝗶𝗼́𝗻 (𝗘𝘀𝗽): Detalle muy cercano, a modo de retrato, de la cabeza de un pico picapinos macho, identificable gracias a la mancha roja de la nuca del ave. Presenta unas listas muy visibles a ambos lados de la cara y del cuello, que enlazan con el plumaje del pecho. Al ser un ejemplar probablemente maduro en la cabeza tiene roja únicamente la nuca, mientras que el píleo es negro; y el pecho es de un color no completamente blanco, sino más sucio, color marfil. The female great spotted woodpecker offers a piece of peanut to her chick, both hanging from the peanut silo on the balcony. The light falls beautifully on the young bird's red crown.
Het jong accepteert het stukje pinda. Het vrouwtje trekt voor de veiligheid haar oogleden over haar ogen. Je weet maar nooit waar zo'n snavel terecht komt. The chick accepts the peanut. The female pulls her eyelids over her eyes for safety. You never know where a beak like that might land.

A male Great Spotted Woodpecker clinging to a metal peanut feeder, and showing part of his very long tongue. He's about the size of a Blackbird, and is mainly black and white. His back, wings, and tail are mainly black, but he has large white shoulder patches and white spots on his wings. His cap and moustache are black, and his cheeks and chin are white. He has a white breast and a red belly, and a bright red patch on the nape of his neck. Female Great Spotted Woodpeckers don't have this red neck patch.
