How plants moved from sea to land and changed Earth forever Long before dinosaurs roamed the land, Earth looked very different from the planet we know today. Around 500 million years ago, most of Earth's surface was bare rock and dry soil. There were no trees, no grass and no flowers. Life existed almost entirely in the oceans. Then something amazing happened: Plants began to grow on land. This moment was one of the most important events in Earth's history because it changed the planet forever. As a geoscientist, I am interested in changes in the diversity of flora and fauna — that's plants and animals — over time. Article continues below Predecessors of plants lived in water The story of plants begins in the water. The earliest plantlike organisms were simple, tiny green life-forms such as algae. You can still see algae today as seaweed along beaches or as green slime on rocks in ponds. Algae have lived in Earth's oceans and lakes for over 1 billion years. They can make their own food, using sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to create sugars. This process is called photosynthesis; it releases oxygen — the gas we need to breathe — as a byproduct. At first, Earth's atmosphere had very little oxygen...

Titan may not have an ocean, a discovery that would redefine the search for life beyond Earth Saturn’s moon Titan may not be hiding the vast underground ocean scientists once envisioned. A fresh look at Cassini’s radio-tracking data reveals that the moon is losing roughly 3 to 4 terawatts of heat, a signal that points toward a slushy interior instead of a continuous sea. This is an important distinction for life, which relies on water’s ability to circulate nutrients from rock. Flavio Petricca led the reanalysis at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). His work links spacecraft tracking with lab-tested ice physics at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. Titan, water, and Cassini Cassini spent years orbiting Saturn, and its Titan flybys produced radio tracking data that let scientists test gravity models. Engineers at JPL tracked the craft using Doppler shift, frequency change caused by relative motion, to sense tiny speed changes during flybys. Those speed changes reflect gravity, but small errors can hide a time lag unless analysts squeeze the noise down. Early ocean confusion In 2008, researchers tied Titan’s changing shape to tides from Saturn, and they leaned toward a buried ocean. During repeated squeezing and stretching driven by gravity, known as tidal flexing, a stiff shell moves less than a softer interior layer. The...

Asteroid Reveals The 5 Key Genetic Ingredients For Life on Earth A new analysis of samples collected from asteroid Ryugu has yielded all five canonical nucleobases that make up RNA and DNA. It's not the first time all five have been isolated from asteroid material – asteroid Bennu also made the grade. But that's what makes this new discovery even more exciting: We're now two for two for a full set of nucleobases on carbonaceous asteroids. This discovery suggests that the ingredients for life may not be rare in the Solar System after all. "The detection of diverse nucleobases in asteroid and meteorite materials demonstrates their widespread presence throughout the Solar System," writes a team led by biogeochemist Toshiki Koga of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, "and reinforces the hypothesis that carbonaceous asteroids contributed to the prebiotic chemical inventory of early Earth." All life on Earth relies upon two basic molecules to store and transfer genetic information: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). In turn, these are made up of five basic molecular building blocks: adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil. Understanding the abundance of these ingredients on early Earth, and where they could have come from, is crucial to understanding how life emerged in the first...

Scientists Think the Most Extreme Beings on Earth Can Help Save Human Lives Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story: Discovered just over 60 years ago, extremophiles are bacteria, archaea, and eukarya that can survive in extremely salty, hot, cold, acidic, or radioactive environments. A new review study explains that extremophiles have revolutionized medicine, and are invaluable allies in the fight against climate change. Extremophiles are difficult to cultivate in the lab, but synthetic biology is making it possible to create organisms with extremophile-like attributes. While visiting the famous hot springs at Yellowstone National Park in 1964, ecologist Tom Brock stumbled upon something very small that would overturn a major paradigm—a microorganism capable of surviving at temperatures much higher than scientists previously thought possible. That organism, subsequently named Thermus aquaticus by Brock and his research team, is widely regarded as one of the first extremophiles (organisms that thrive in hostile environments) ever discovered. T. aquaticus eventually went on to make a significant contribution to science by providing the crucial enzyme needed for the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique that’s central to vaccine development. Now, a new review study published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology showcases how Brock’s discovery was only the preamble to the amazing scientific findings these tiny microbes...

EarthCARE shows the distribution of mineral dust in the atmosphere
Global distribution of mineral dust measured with EarthCARE’s high-spectral-resolution atmospheric lidar (ATLID) from June to August 2025 based on the EarthCARE products ATL_EBD_2A and ATL_TC__2A.
ATLID detects the presence of aerosol with a resolution of about 1 km horizontally and 100 m vertically. For the global map, all data points that had been classified as dust were counted and allocated to 1° × 1° latitude-longitude grid boxes over the observation period of June to August 2025. The colours indicate the number of data points classified as dust in 1° × 1° latitude-longitude grid boxes.
