This little ink sketch of The Ape, the man mountain beast responsible for giving Popeye his namesake, was the thing to have inspired the entire shebang! After reading the original story itself, I sketched out how I imagined the character to look like based around his description along with various qualities on the "brutes" the one-eyed sailor squared off against.

Popeye's character studies as mentioned above were inspired by Darwin's famous evolutionary theory on Homo Sapiens and, of course, Popeye's "family photos" used in The Private Life of Popeye or Popeye's Life Story (published in March 1931)

I originally did these pieces way back in 2018 but redid it in full digital inking in 2022 as a part of my Photoshop digital art practices. Around the time of doing the original pencil piece, I initially invested a lot of my time and cash into purchasing the Fantagraphics published Popeye newspaper comic strip collection by his original Illinois based creator, E.C. Segar. The collection included a lot of bonus promotional work for the character, along with stories that were loosely adapted into the Dave and Max Fleischer animated cartoons. I've always wondered as to why there haven't been a lot of materials that went much closer to the original Comics, considering how much of an expanded mythology and emotional (and comedic) development the evidence of Sweet Haven had. This inspired me to do my best to deep dive into more aspects of the franchise to adapt into an epic retelling of his origins as revealed via an interview frame story. I was especially aiming to have the story be drawn close to a style reminiscent of the Segar comics and the later work of his pupil/successor, Bud Sagendorf. I'm really hoping that I was able to achieve that
Along the way, I did everything I could to study the roots of the character, including cultural references, inspiration, creative backgrounds, character evolutions and overall building my own iceberg of Popeye history. Some of these even included me adding my own takes and artistic studies of various contemporaries that have lent their artistic hands into the Character's history over the years. I even did a bit of an age study based around the "family photos" originally published in Popeye's Life Story.
Throughout my studies, I especially became intrigued behind how the character became his namesake in-universe. I sort of wanted to showcase this specific beast of a man as an answer to "what if Popeye had his own Doomsday" or "what other character had given him such a run for his money before Bluto came into the picture?" This character has never been depicted in any media relating to Popeye nor any fan art surprisingly. The original telling of Popeye's Life Story hasn't really been all that revered amongst modern fans aside from a few who have recently contributed to his history in the form of webcomics for King Feature Syndicate as of late by an artist whose love for the character exceeds a lot of their contemporaries. The artist, of course, I'm talking about is R.K. Milholland and another close friend of mine who has devoted his passions to the character's longevity into his art, storyboard artist - Leo Laifa
Throughout the time that we have known each other via Twitter/X, we both often discussed our fondness for the character and encouraged each other to put our works out there for the world to enjoy. Not only that, but finally invest so much more into our passions and hopefully make a killing out of it while having fun doing so. I think that this is just a bit of strange timing given his recent public domain status, but here's concept art I've thrown around for awhile for a Popeye origin retelling inspired by Segar's mythos.
