Power Outages Hit North Shore and South Shore Areas
A widespread power outage impacted residents on both the North Shore and South Shore, leaving over 100,000 without electricity for several hours. Entergy crews are currently restoring power. The outage occurred during a period of extreme heat, making the lack of air conditioning particularly challenging. Entergy attributed the outage to a "load shed," a last-resort measure taken by the regional transmission center to prevent a larger, more damaging failure of the power grid.
CLECO also reported a forced power outage affecting approximately 25,000 customers in communities including Covington, Mandeville, Madisonville, Lacombe, and Franklinton. This outage, lasting under two hours, was directed by the Midcontinent Independent Reliability System Operator (MISO) to avert a more extensive and prolonged disruption. CLECO apologized for the lack of advance notice, explaining that the emergency nature of the situation prevented timely communication. They are coordinating with MISO to investigate the cause and prevent future incidents.
