I‘m so chuffed that this particular PhD studentship received funding & envious of the lucky person who will get to do the research.
Apply, folks!

Montage showing coloured illustrations of moths and the envelope in which they’re kept. There is blue handwriting on the envelope, which might read: ‘Frohawk’s drawings [o]f Melan[istic] Leps’.

Excited to find drawings of moths by FW Frohawk (1861-1946) in the archive of biologist William Bateson @theul.bsky.social.

They’re catalogued as ‘27 drawings of Milan Leps’, but think this should be ‘Melan[istic] Leps’? Do they look right for showing melanism, #TeamMoth? MS Add. 8634/J.3 #EntHist

Interesting to find some nature printed butterflies @theul.bsky.social yesterday (‘lepidochromes’). The butterflies were pressed on prepared paper, which was folded, allowing the scales to transfer to create mirror images of both sides of the insects’ wings. 1/2 #enthist @camglamresearch.bsky.social

Hoverfly resurrection. 21 September 1901, @theul.bsky.social Librarian and dipterist Francis Jenkinson recovers a Marmalade hoverfly from a spider’s web, “tightly wound up … which being unwound came to life again in a pill-box by the evening.” #enthist #Diptera #Hoverflies

Really enjoyed the insect display in the Natural History Gallery at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery today, and the focus on how insects were collected. #enthist

An entry from Francis Jenkinson’s diary, 10 September 1901. “Found a small Pipunculus ( ) dead on the sill of the W. window of the Librarian’s Room.
5.30 went to Mr Vail’s, & with much help from Aldis, obtained, took home, & eventually set up my incandescent table lamp. By it I was able to pin and mount flies in complete comfort till 1:30.”

10 Sept 1901. Francis Jenkinson, Librarian at @theul.bsky.social, collects a dead fly from the Library and gets an “incandescent table lamp” so he can sit up pinning and mounting flies until the small hours “in complete comfort”. #Diptera #enthist @theulspeccoll.bsky.social

That’s a very good not least because of the variety of wings - both bird & insect. #enthist meets #PuttiOfScience 😆
Thank you. You’re in!

Thanks for the hash tag alert. There was a (new to me) Mexican dragonfly on the sidelines of the #BSHS display @theulspeccoll.bsky.social today, so watch this space! #EntHist 💚

We really have to get #EntHist trending again, like in the olden days of the sadly unusable platform that shall not be mentioned.
