Metabolic food waste If people eat too much and gain weight, it is bad for their health. At the same time, it is a waste of resources because it is unnecessary. Therefore, if we can reduce excessive consumption, it will benefit both the environment and human health. This is the idea behind the term 'metabolic food waste'.

What is the rebound effect? The rebound effect happens when the savings generated from reducing food waste are spent on other goods or services with a considerable environmental footprint. Rebound effects can offset expected environmental benefits by more than 50%, and in some cases up to 90%. Therefore, it is paramount that rebound effects are taken into account in food waste prevention initiatives.
