Brandon had only been eight when they’d moved to Honolulu from Scottsdale—a suburb of Phoenix—so he’d had an easier time adapting. Brandon had only been in third grade where kids were still little and less judgy. He’d also picked up pidgin, defying their mom’s efforts to make him keep sounding like he came from Scottsdale. But Luke—Lucas, then—had been ten, in fifth grade, the age when kids start becoming aware of who and what they are, sorting themselves into one niche or another and defining themselves against opposing groups. Kids started to form into tribes: the brains, the jocks, the baby criminals, the popular kids, the rich kids, the girls who dotted their i’s with hearts, the mokes and titas, the displaced and disoriented mainland haoles, the quiet ones, and the weird, artsy ones. Lucas had fit into none of those boxes.
