Spotted a glorious patch of brilliantly-colored firewheel while hiking. This vivid native wildflower is known by many names, but its scientific moniker is Gaillardia pulchella.

Field with grasses and Gaillardia in different stages of bloom. Gaillardia flowers have numerous thin petals. They are a warm orange/yellow flower with a burgundy/red shade surrounding the yellow center.

A Gaillardia pulchella wildflower (also called Indian Blanket, Firewheel, Girasol Rojo) was blooming in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on May 4, 2025. There is an indian blanket fungus weevil (trigonorhinus limbatus) on the flower. The flower is lit by sunshine while nearby foliage is in dark shade.
