The day job took me to NYC this week, and I had the chance to stop and say hi to Father Duffy of the AEF 165th Infantry Regiment (the former “Fighting 69th”).

For #blackandwhitewednesday we’ve found this lovely snap from #WW1. It’s from a collection of photographs belonging to Sgt. Harry Coates, 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, and was taken in France in 1916. We love that the soldier in the centre has his accordion with him! #music #firstworldwar #archive

If anybody wants to buy it - or even better add it to their course's reading list - you can find it @universitypress.cambridge.org and online.

I am such a #FirstWorldWar geek.

I visited the Western Front twice in 2024 - doing tours around Arras (the Somme) and Ypres.

Last year, I went to Sarajevo to see the site of the assassination.

And now I've just booked a trip to Turkey, where I intend to visit Gallipoli and Istanbul!! ✈️

Beaumont-Hamel: A Fragment Returned During a visit to the Western Front in the summer of 2025, I was told a story that has stayed with me ever since. It was not a story of sweeping offensives or celebrated generals, nor one that fits…

At Beaumont-Hamel on the Somme, a German officer picked up a fragment of stained glass in 1914.
He carried it through the war and returned it nearly 50 years later.

A small, human story from the Western Front.

Four Years of War In One Field - WW1 Documentary
Four Years of War In One Field - WW1 Documentary YouTube video by Battle Guide

Battle Guide has just dropped an analysis of a single grid square on the #Somme. The focus of the story is how many bodies were recovered there by graves registration teams after the Great War. To me, this is a must-watch story for those interested in the #FirstWorldWar.

A cartoon of three men in casual dress stood to attention holding their bayonets. All three look very tired. A caption underneath says "the cheerful countenances with which we greet our bayonet fighting instructor at 6:15am!". There is a dog next to the group with a speech bubble saying "Golly! He's snoring!"

This cartoon from May 1916 shows men turning up for early morning military training. It was drawn by Horace J. Rylands during his #FirstWorldWar service. Horace was born in Torquay, but spent most of his life in Sheffield as an engineer with the Tramway Department, before moving to Bakewell.
