This life-size bronze bison (not a buffalo) stands in front of the museum and site of Fort Calgary, adjacent to the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers. Fort Calgary was built in 1875 and was the first settlement in the area. But for thousands of years prior to that herds of bison would have been a common sight for the First Nations people who lived in the area. Once European settlers arrived the Bison were overhunted to the point of near extinction. Fortunately they are no longer an endangered species.

Looking at this statue one can easily picture what the area might have with many of these magnificent beasts roaming the land.

Happy 1st Day of Winter all! The forecast for #Calgary is >0°C highs for the next week. Most tolerable. 🙂

This photo of a life-size bronze #Bison is by Lethbridge artist Don Toney and titled, "The Mighty and Once Many." It stands in front of #FortCalgary. #yyc high-rises are in the BG.
